The Crow Conveyance System

Crows have been a popular method of sending messages for centuries. Pigeons were historically used for messaging, but there were few on Kiria. Around 1300 ME mail began to be transported by a combination of crows and horses. It is unknown who began the practice.   Crows, with their cleverness and memory for locations, were set in cities and towns across Kiria. Their speed and ability to travel literally "as the crow flies" made the postal system much faster, and made it possible to send messages much further across the country.    Short-distance mail is still usually transported on foot or horseback, but the Conveyance System truly revolutionized long-distance mail and the spreading of news. The use of crows also massively cut down the price of postage, and use of the Conveyance System is fairly cheap - sending a letter often only costs one coin. The Conveyance System can also be used to send small packages.

Conveyance Hubs

Most towns and all cities have a Conveyance hub, where crows can rest and bring messages to. The central piece of the Conveyance system is The Conveyance Building in Gillamoor. Conveyance hubs also provide dictation and translation services for numerous languages and often distribute local newspapers.

The Conveyance System

A letter is written at home or dictated at a Conveyance hub. It is then handed off to a worker at the local hub, and sent by crow to the hub closest to the recipient's address. Sometimes, this takes two flights, depending on the distance. Once at the hub, the letter is sent either by crow or horseback to the house itself. Some cities offer crow-to-house services, but most still use horses for the final delivery.
