Ravencross Library

Purpose / Function

The Ravencross Library serves several purposes. It is a public library, providing reading material to cardholders for free. It holds a large collection of fiction and non-fiction books from all over Kiria and from elsewhere around Iaris. Many come to the Library to read or to study. Some rooms are reserved for silent reading or studying, and others are reserved for group work. Patrons can also reserve rooms for specific purposes.   The Library also holds a huge collection of reference materials. It is the largest music library in Kiria, holding manuscripts and scores to countless works. It holds original manuscripts of many famous written works, and hundreds of maps from various points in history. The library also features artwork, both old and current, between the shelves and around open spaces. It is a huge draw for art students to do studies of artwork or of the library itself.   Librarians host a multitude of events, from writing workshops and book clubs to movie and game nights to griffin rearing lectures. The events are open to anyone, so denizens of Ravencross often end up there in the afternoons.

Architecture

The Ravencross Library is a large, sprawling brick building, truly the centerpoint of Ravencross. The original library was a smaller rectangular structure, but it has been added to through the years. The library features decorative columns and various statues around the walls, many of which are mythological or literary in nature. One section of the library wall is painted to resemble book spines, though it has not been retouched in many years and is rather faded. The main entrance to the library is a wide staircase, guarded on each side by marble statues of griffins.   On entering the library, patrons find themselves in a large open foyer, which holds the main information desk as well as serving as a gathering and study space. From there, doorways lead into the various wings of the library. Bookshelves reach from floor to ceiling, with sliding ladders available for the taller shelves. Each section of the library also has a reading room or gathering space.
