Il-Azori

Founded in the aftermath of the Fires as the successor to the old Socalyad kingdom, itself a descendent of the ancient Tomoria empire, Il Azori shines as the jewel of the Sandstone desert. Neighboured by the Sandstone Desert and Al-Barak to the south, and the Vulgar Empire to the east, Azori is an oasis kingdom of palms, figs and honey that are exported south and east, the only part of the north coast that is more fertile being around the regional capital Ul-Letoris. While often confused with Al-Barak to the south, the two nations are quite distinct upon closer inspection, and have not seen eye to eye historically, even once the Dominion took over them both. At times when Phurzia is weak, the two have often taken the opportunity to attack one another, tending to take opposing sides in civil war.

Structure

A figurehead monarchy, the old absolute monarchs of the kingdom were removed long ago when the Dominion invaded, but since the monarchical tradition was strong there, the Dominion opted to crown one of the invading generals as king. However, over the years, even this false-monarchy has declined in power to the point of being a mere figurehead for the Governor appointed by Phoz. Not all are happy with this arrangement, least of all those fed up with the capital’s taxes and regulations.

Assets

The southern peripheries of the ‘kingdom’ or Governate are dry and hot scrubs, leading into the Sandstone desert to the south. The only safe passage through this desert is either through the mountains to the east, under Vulgar’s technical rule, or through the long and perilous Black Road, named for its use of coal as a marker. Oases are what make these regions more workable.   The northern coast in contrast is wetter and more lush, and also open to trade from across the known world. Due to its proximity with the ruined Northern Kingdom, there exists a substantial black market and criminal underworld, as trade occurs among pirates and outlaws further north, and many smuggle in contraband through Il-Azori’s coastal cities and towns.

Demography and Population

The three cities of Il-Azori, including the capital are all located near sources of water, and tend to be in close proximity to the Black Road as well.   Aside Ul-Letoris are the lesser cities of Bharaan and Hligash, with the latter being an explicit trading city, second only to Ul-Letoris itself. Bharaan, the smallest of the cities, with only forty-thousand souls living there, is also the closest to the Sandstone desert, and the people living there tend to have darker skin and a more conservative lifestyle than those nearer the north-coast. Cultural mixing between them and the native inhabitants of the desert is also frequent.

Military

Forbidden from raising an army of its own except in emergency times, the Dominion ensures Azori is garrisoned by forces from other parts of its empire, while local forces are limited to militias and guards. In such times of emergency, however, they can raise as many as fifteen or even twenty thousand men.

Religion

Many gods and goddesses are followed here, but chief among them is Korrass, the sea-god.

Foreign Relations

As a governate of the Dominion, the Governor put in charge ensures the people pay taxes on time, and is heavily involved in the administration of the territory. While in poor relations with Al-Barak, it has surprisingly warm relations with the Illustrio Republic to the west, and the centaurian Samanga tribes on the other side of the desert.
