Hot Flash

When they are at home, the Ice Elves of Liggjavard do not typically go beyond their cold, marble halls. They don't go into the warmer limestone caverns or the volcanic tubes deep beneath the surface. Heat is difficult for them to tolerate, and they have much to do in the cold places of the realm.
You want to do what?
All that is true, yet sometimes, an Ice Elf is cursed with a compulsion to go up into the Hot, to see the light of the Day Star, to experience liquid water. It is the height of folly, a self-destructive impulse that the community abhors. Some elves have these thoughts and repress them successfully, but some succumb. The slip out of their communities, supplied for a voyage, and begin the long climb to the surface. The most clever will prepare clothes with many pockets, to take pieces of the cooling issteinn marble with them.   The Ice Elves call this condition "Hot Flash." It is known to be fatal.
It is hard for my brother to be gone. But we continue.
The community considers those lost to the Hot to have died. Heirs inherit, underlings are promoted, Explorer crew passphrases are changed. The children are told that the Hot Man took them. The lost are mourned in the traditional way, with family members cutting themselves and painting bloody runes of remembrance onto the ice of the frozen sea beyond the settlements. And life goes on.

What Happens?

Those who survive the long solo climb to the surface typically find themselves in Rothilimion, to be greeted by others who made the trek before them. If they are interested, they are allowed to make new lives in the surface city. Some are able to settle down. And some seem driven to wander.
