Brunivard Termite

Highly social and industrious insects, Brunivard Termites construct elaborate complexes in the boles of the enormous Brunivard Sequoia. Worker termites are on the order of 50cm, with the queens reaching 2 meters or more. They chew through the heartwood of the trees, carving tunnels and galleries to raise their young and protect the colony. Unlike other insects that will use the same structure through many generations, the termites seem to associate each colony with its queen. Once the queen dies, the colony is abandoned and the new queen starts fresh in another location. Other animals, including tribes of humanoids, will use the abandoned colony complex for shelter. Without the secretions of the termites, spongy replacement wood will begin to grow to fill in the tunnels and without substantial effort, the opportunistic shelter seekers will need to be on their way within a few years.
