The Church of the Tempest

"...and so they stood, the storm raging among them, the crashing waves of enemies were beaten back by what seemed to be a wall of holy lightning, wind and water. We stood and watched in amazement as the combined arms of the Holy order of Storm Callers smashed those they considered the heretics, our swords and shields felt as though enfeebled when witnessing the spectacle. Dunraglan, our sergeant, a man I've seen personally fell an ogre, knelt as though to pray and we all followed suit..." - Biography of Luten Mallard, Soldier of Craidd March during the city siege of 454

The Church of the Tempest

The Church of the tempest is an old order that has deep roots all across Huldath. This ancient order of Clerics, Paladins and Scholars has always been a bastion of defence for the weak and helpless. While they hold no significant estates, abbeys holds or even churches in the lands they are some of the most numerous of the holy orders. While they have never officially been granted lands, endorsed by any of the City-Lords, the Church of the tempest and its Stormcallers are respected by all of the civil lands.

History

The true foundation date of the church of the Tempest is unknown. It is thought to be somewhere around 30-40 years after the start of the current Era, however many scholars argue it predates the current Era by several hundred years. The original records and spiritual home of the Storm Callers is currently ruined church-hold; The Tantum-Auriswhich currently is in a state of ruin but has been recently reinhabited by the Storm Callers after they reclaimed it from Tree-Picts Circa 641. With the sacking of the Tantum Auris in 112 CE, the original records of the Storm Callers and many of their holy artifacts have been lost. Since its sacking members of the church have led semi-nomadic lifestyles forming small Storm Cells.

Organization

Ranks   Storm-Matron The Rank of Storm Matron has not been held since the sacking of the Tantum Auris, Historically the Storm-matron has been the guiding hand of the church and has interpreted the signs given by the storm. The Storm-Matron ascends to her position from order matron when she calls a storm from the storm queen and calls her power, typically lightning, to imbue her.
Order matron Order matrons are typically charged with leading smaller groups of storm callers. They form the council of Storm-mothers, which, in the absence of a Storm-Matron, has met when large decisions need to be made the latest of which was which of the orders would be charged with the reclamation of the Tantum Auris.
Storm Warden & Grand Warden Storm Wardens are the rank and file, both in paladin and clerical bents. There are numerous ranks within the storm-wardens. The highest-ranking of the storm wardens is named grand warden and, where they become required, are charged with guiding military matters within the church. Grand Warden is the highest rank it is possible for male members of the church of the tempest to reach.
Aspirant Aspirants are the junior members of the church and an aspirant must hold the rank for 7 years before becoming a warden.
