S17 - At what cost? Report

General Summary

Before reporting back to the Jito, Mizuki scrutinized the mask using her familiar. Instantly, she is racked with pain and sees disturbing visions of blood, Yomi, images of oni, and the Kimon. She screams and her familiar’s form is flooded with taint and killed. Akira, ever curious, reached out to touch the mask, but the party stopped him.

The party then made their way back to the Jito and presented the mask to him and his onmyoji. Akira lunged to touch it, but nothing happened. Surprised at the boy being unaffected, the Jito questions the party. The party fesses up, remarking that Akira harbors an oni within him. The Jito immediately has Akira arrested, and Jiko steps in, saying that he will have to be arrested as well. The guards take them away and the Jito dismisses the party. The group then try to plan their next move but eventually retire to their own tents to rest.

Elsewhere in the war camp, Akira and Jiko are locked up into separate bamboo cages and watched by several guards. Yamami appears and walks up towards Akira expressionless. Suddenly, she summons her ancestor to attack him. Jiko is powerless to help Akira, and the guards also fail to restrain Yamami. Akira goes down and a shockwave of taint bursts out from him as the Kokoraiju spawns once again. Storm clouds gather overhead as gongs sound the alarm throughout the war camp, alerting the weary party.

The Kokoraiju then shoots a beam of red lightning out its mouth, immediately taking out Yamami and nine guards. The rest of the party arrive at the scene, with Kyo, Jiko and Jugen confronting the beast head on while Mizuki checks on Yamami. The Kokoraiju tries to repeat its powerful lightning attack, but is nullified by the winds created by Kyo and his Tetsaiga. Jiko deals the final blow and the Kokoraiju’s body sloughs away from an unconscious Akira. Jiko slumps to the ground, sobbing and cradling Akira while apologizing to him repeatedly. Soldiers then swarm the area to put out fires and rush the injured to the medical tent. The Jito arrives and tries to console Jiko in his own way. Mizuki walks to the medical tent dazed, and sees several medics fruitlessly trying to resuscitate Yamami. She then goes to do a ritual removing taint from a few of the soldiers. About an hour later, the medics had given up on reviving Yamami. A few moments later, however, her eyes flutter open. Yamami wakes, but with something glaringly amiss within her.
