Vidar Bjornson

Vidar is the youngest of his family. His father Bjorne’s name was given to him for his uncommonly large size and strength; and only seemed to fit even more once he grew into his large ruddy beard. Bjorne’s wife Asta gave him 5 strong sons, and no daughters. When Asta fell pregnant again, it was with great surprise that Vidarr was born nearly a whole moon’s turn early. Small and sickly, Bjorne was disgusted by his son’s weakness, and wanted to cast him into the sea, but was stopped by the Druid Leoqen who advised Jarl Hjalmar. He said that it is nature’s way to weed out the weak, and that only the strong may thrive. However, it is not for a father to decide who is unworthy of nature’s test. Furious, but knowing that he dared not risk angering the An Cearcall, agreed to raise his son, until his Test came. Through the years, Vidar grew tall and thin, with little of the strength his father and brothers showed. Being small and weak made him an easy target for his cruel siblings, and so to avoid beatings he learned to be quiet, and failing that quick and agile. He spent a great deal of his time in the woods, hunting and exploring to fill his time. When the time came for his Test, left carrying a hunting knife and his short bow, and returned on the 30th carrying a rolled up bear pet on his shoulder.
Years passed, and Vidar continued to prove himself as a warrior, though in his father’s eyes he was still a disgrace. While his brothers wore heavy armor and swung axes with enough force to split shields and sunder men, Vidar wore leathers and wielded knives and swords with brutal precision. The Druid (still unnamed because I don’t know if you’ve got a name for him) took interest in Vidar due to his fondness for the forest and began grooming him as his successor. It seemed it was Vidar’s time to shed himself of his father’s disdain when the call to raid was sounded again. He and his five brothers boarded a longship and set off. However, when they reached the mouth of a river and began sailing up it, Vidar realized with horror that he was not sailing for Grecian lands, but the wetlands. They landed in the cover of night, encircling the small village. His father’s horn was blown, and the raid began. Farms burned; cattle slaughtered, men women and children killed without mercy. It was something out of a nightmare, and Vidar couldn’t understand. Watching his brother Modi bisect a girl who could not have been older than 13 with a smile on his face, he could take no more, and cast entangle on him, and ran off into the night.
