Karna

The Bountiful Crescent

It is a rich land, with bounty to be found everywhere - from the rolling hills and endless fields of rice and wheat to the affluent cities guarded by thick stone walls and sometimes even ancient archaeotech recovered from the ruins of the old ones - and it's people, they think that they are superior to us, even though they are weak and feeble...   ...Their emperors were once mighty and noble but now they are but decadent fools that endlessly indulge in their whims and lusts - their bellies fattened by food and their minds left to rot in their prisons of excess and nauseating extravagance. Their armies are laughably pathetic, led by fools and cowards, and armed with weapons considered outdated by the rest of the world...   ...We will conquer Karna - however apparently weak their defenders may be but we must keep a watchful eye for any surprises that await us. ~ Tamir Shah, Great Khan of the Obsidian Horde

Geography

Karna is located in the western seaboard on the continent of Asvalla, forming a crescent that borders a great ocean beyond which lies the unknown. Its borders are defined by a great mountain range that runs along its south and a vast river to the east that separates Karna from the rest of the continent.   Three major river networks feed the vast region, extending its tendrils into hills, plains and forests across Karna. These rivers are:
  • The Blue River, feeding into the ocean and snaking its way along Karna's southern floodplains.
  • The White Ivory, an extensive network whose source is Karna's largest lake in the north. It feeds into a large gulf in the northwest and is connected to the Blue River.
  • The Bekong, located in Karna's western plains whose mouth feeds into the north.
  • Karna's south is dominated by fertile floodplains, occasionally interrupted by rolling hills and ending at the Shao Plateau that lies in between the southern mountains and the Bekong. The central regions of Karna are comprised of hills, temperate forests and as one gets farther inland, a vast central plateau hosting a dry arid plain. The north is sub-tropical and jungles and marshland make up much of the landscape.   Much of Karna can be described as beautiful, from the snowy peaks and verdant rolling hills of the south to the misty jungles of the north. Vast stretches of the coastline are white sandy beaches with mangroves dominating the north.

    Fauna & Flora

Karna is home to many species of plants and animals, ranging from tiny toad-like creatures that inhabit the marshlands of the north to great redwoods that make up the central forests. Many assortments of creatures live in the varying biomes across Karna, many of them dangerous, mystical or alien.   Plants   Redroot - Found in the central forests of Karna, it is a root plant common in its home region. The plant is used in many of Karna's traditional medicines and is also a central ingredient in many dishes across the region.   Shakbal - Meaning "Snow Flower" in Khalian, Shakbal can be found growing in cold climates and is primarily found in the mountains of the south. The plant has many medicinal purposes and is used to cure stomach aches.   Dongwei's Blossom - A rare aquatic flower that inhabits the Blue River. While harmful if digested raw, it holds mystical properties when treated with a cocktail of ingredients and is primarily used by cloudwalkers to peer into the past, present and future.   Predators   Terror Birds - These large carnivorous birds roam the plains of the west and are the dominant predators in their environments.   Cats - There are many species of cats found across Karna, from the jaguars of the northern jungles to the mountain panthers of the south. The most common and mythologized of them all is the Moon Tiger, inhabiting the central regions of Karna.   There many other predators that hunt in Karna, from the many birds of prey to packs of canines that stalk the north.   Herbivores   Kaathku - A rhino-like creature with an elongated neck, helping it reach the treetops of its forested environments. The creature, if provoked, can be dangerous and uses its large feet to trample any predators.   Horses - Originally from the western plains, Horses come in many different breeds. They are used as mounts and beasts of burden, with many cultures placing the horse as an important part of their society.   Cattle - The most common domesticated animals, coming from all shapes and sizes. They are used as livestock and for larger animals, beasts of burden and even warbeasts.   Above are but some of the herbivores that graze the many biomes of Karna.

    Natural Resources

The lands of Karna are rich in natural resources, with lumber, minerals and food found aplenty. It's mountains and quarries hold much wealth in the form of metals, gems and ancient alloys while its fertile plains and valleys provide much food to the millions that live on Karna.   Much of the raw metals that feeds the industries of Karna come from the Southern Mountains, a great natural barrier that separates Karna from the badlands of the deep south. Iron, bronze, nickel and many more metals such as these are found there, with the deepest mines containing precious ores of gold and silver. Another thing found in the mountains are ancient fossils of buildings, built long ago in a once brighter age, made of alloys and materials unknown to the peoples of Heia. These ruins are highly valuable as some of the materials can be reforged or recycled.   Food is grown mainly in the floodplains and terraces of the south, where rice, wheat and other staple crops are grown. Fruits are cultivated from farms in the central regions or picked from the forests. Fish can be found aplenty in the seas, for swarms of them swim in the waters that crash into the dirt of Karna.   The rivers provide much needed water for farms across Karna and to the north, there are tales of gold that wash in the flowing waters of the Bekong.   Sources of limestone, marble and other rocks are mainly found in quarries scattered all across Karna, most of them in the central regions or in the sub-tropical north. Speaking of the north, its jungles provide tropical lumber in high demand in the south and central regions for its high-quality.
