Bifyrd-Feron
Nelafayn Hundred, Meselyneshire
Held by Clan Calayner for Earl Declaen Caldeth of Minarsas
Byfird: 129 POP
Feron: 75 POP
Bifyrd Manor, held by Clan Calayner for five generations, was founded at the site of an ancient watchtower and bridge, which crosses the Caiteri Stream near the place where it spills into the Hemurin River.
The bridge was repaired to allow travel upriver, but the watchtower has never been remade, and lies in ruins at the top of a rise overlooking the river.
The makers of these stone structures are unknown, but there has been some speculation that they are of Khuzan design. Perhaps the tower was once a waystation on an ancient highway between Azadmere and the Felsha Mountains.
The land in the area is of excellent quality, and Bifyrd has prospered since its founding. Eventually, when the manor grew to a size that was too large to manage, Feron was created, with one of the younger members of Clan Calayner being assigned as Bailiff, typically the successor of the current Lord of Bifyrd. The Caiteri Stream has been considered the border between the two manors since Feron was founded, and the two share the services of one mill, erected on the Bifyrd side of the stream.
Due to the isolated location along the northern shore of the Hemurin, the two manors rarely see much traffic, although travellers heading to the western parts of Nelafayn do occasionally pass through. A modest tax is charged to non-residents who require the use of the bridge.
The Lord of Bifyrd Manor is currently 26 year old Lumin of Calayner, who has held this station since his father Oman was killed in battle five years ago. Lumin distances himself from the operation of the fief, and treats the villagers with indifference.
For the first time, someone who is not a member of Clan Calayner has been appointed to the post of Bailiff of Feron Manor. Saran of Varela is a close friend of Lumin, and his appointment has caused quite a stir among the residents of both manors.
The villagers of Feron will often defer problems to Bifyrd, a practice which irks Saran, but over which he has little control.
(A) Bifyrd Manor
Situated on a small hill, the manor has an excellent view of the surrounding countryside. The manor building is a single story stone structure, while the stable and other structures are wooden. The manor stables are maintained by a bonded ostler.
(B) Feron Manor
While not as impressive a site as Bifyrd, Feron nonetheless has a good view of the village down to the river. The 8’ wooden palisade is similar to the one at Bifyrd, and all of the buildings in the compound are wooden. Saran is the only noble living at Feron, and consequently he has only a small staff.
(C) Abandoned Watchtower
The watchtower (if that was truly it’s purpose) lies in ruins at the top of this small rise, affording a good view of the river in both directions. Many have surmised that it was built to monitor traffic on the Hemurin River when there were numerous gargun occupying the forests on the south shore.
The bridge and tower may even have been built by the Khuzan, but no one has ever attempted to verify this.
The tower consists of three broken walls, surrounded by numerous blocks that have fallen from the structure. A pit leads to some empty tunnels beneath the tower.
Many tales have been told to village children about various spectres that haunt the ruins, but so far no actual sightings have been made.
1 HALF-VILLEIN (Gabosar of Ubel)
Size: 5 ML: 90
Many of the villagers wonder how Gabosar is able to manage his workload so successfully in the fields, considering he is somewhat overweight and always appears out of breath. His two eldest sons are big enough to share the load, however, while Gabosar’s wife manages their small home and an infant girl, born only a few months ago.
2 VILLEIN (Omel of Valada)
Size: 3 ML: 60
Omel stands a head taller than anyone else in the village, and can always be seen in a crowd. He and his wife have a 16 year-old daughter.
3 FARMER (Uradah of Rysten)
Size: 6 ML: 70
If ever there is a favour to be asked in the village, Uradah is the most likely candidate to agree to help out. In fact, he has been so willing to help his neighbours in the past that he is often late getting his own work done. Uradah is a competent farmer, but he often thinks that he and his wife and their four children would lead easier lives as non-free residents.
4 FARMER (Largo of Uberma)
Size: 5 ML: 60
Largo’s laugh is one that seems to carry all the way across the village, and it is difficult not to smile when in his presence. Some speculate that he survived some tragedy in his past, and is so grateful to be alive that he can find humour in even the most difficult of situations. Largo has been married only a short time, and he and his wife have adopted three orphaned children.
5 MILLER (Takarn of Arlis)
Size: 4 ML: 60 Qual: *** Price: Avg
While not the most skilled, Takarn is the only miller in the region, a fact that he constantly reminds his lord as well as his neighbours. Takarn is unmarried, but has made room for his cousin and his wife and child, who all work very hard in the mill to pay for their rent.
6 HALF-VILLEIN (Jergë of Guinalesh)
Size: 5 ML: 90
Jergë lives in a small cottage with his wife and three children. He works his fields diligently, but has a habit of complaining a bit too often about his difficult life.
7 HALF-VILLEIN (Haeri of Serdel)
Size: 2 ML: 80
Haeri lost his wife and one of his children to sickness last winter. He attempts to disguise his bitterness, but it often boils over at the slightest provocation. He is very protective of his one remaining child, however, and seldom shows his anger when accompanied by his son.
8 VILLEIN (Mobinë of Aldin)
Size: 5 ML: 70
The villagers often speculate whether Mobinë will return from his fields on a given day. He is surely the eldest person in the village, but somehow manages to complete his daily tasks. No one can actually remember Mobinë ever coming to Bifyrd, he has simply always been there. Two years ago Mobinë’s long lost nephew arrived in the village with his wife and two children. No one has learned where the young family came from, or whether the young man is really Mobinë’s nephew.
9 COTTAR (Lelen of Ebor)
Size: 2 ML: 90
Lelen is a pleasant person, well liked by all of the villagers. She lives with her aging aunt, and hires other villagers to work her land for her. Lelen’s cottage is far too large for herself and her aunt, so she uses the extra space to house travelers. As the village offers no inn for accommodations, her space is often filled.
10 COTTAR (Claena of Wyfid)
Size: 4 ML: 90
For a cottar, Claena possesses a large parcel of land, but he is hopeful of one day obtaining even more and improving his status in the village. This should lead to a better life for himself, his wife and their two children.
11 COTTAR (Kord of Ardel)
Size: 3 ML: 85
Carrying on a conversation with Kord is often difficult, for the young man’s mind always seems elsewhere. He lives with his sister and their mother, who lost her husband to bandits many years ago.
12 YEOMAN-BEADLE (Yoreth of Kelis)
Size: 7 ML: 75
Yoreth is a veteran of several battles, and he tells stories of the many gargun killed by his longbow. He seems content with a quieter life having settled in Bifyrd, married and raised a family of five, but he is disturbed by nightmares of comrades lost to the gargun, and often yearns to return to the battlefield to avenge their deaths.
13 METALSMITH (Barnë of Meriel)
Size: 3 ML: 85 Qual: **** Price: High
Barnë is a skilled metalsmith, and seems quite humble about his talents, until he presents his bill. He and his wife would like to have children, but have not yet been successful. Barnë’s sister and her husband were recently killed in an accident, and the smith has adopted their son, hoping to one day train him as an apprentice.
14 COTTAR (Ardaet of Serdolian)
Size: 2 ML: 70
Ardaet lives with his younger brother, Goris, and the two can be heard bickering with each other more often than not. Goris would like to find a wife and obtain his own land so he can be rid of his brother. Recently, Erilëa [31] has caught his attention, and Goris will often go out of his way to walk by her cottage, attempting to catch glimpses of the grieving widow. He has yet to muster enough courage to speak with her.
15 VILLEIN (Ondren of Karion)
Size: 7 ML: 75
While not as old as Mobinë, Ondren is considered one of the wisest of the villagers, and many will seek his advice concerning a variety of matters. His voice carries considerable weight among the villagers of both manors. Ondren’s large family includes his wife, three children and his wife’s aging parents, who are no longer able to work their own land.
16 VILLEIN-HERDER (Caran of Orlis)
Size: 4 ML: 85
The herder of Bifyrd Manor has had a great deal of success of late, but not due to his disposition, however. Caran is a most unlikable character, generally treating the other villagers with less respect than the animals he is charged with. His wife and two children also participate with caring for the herds.
17 FARMER (Hodanis of Wynderiel)
Size: 5 ML: 75
Hodanis is an impatient man, who has little time for his neighbours. He and his wife have two sons who assist with the crops. Hodanis’ mother also lives in their small cottage.
18 WOODCRAFTER (Halir of Seren)
Size: 3 ML: 115 Qual: ***** Price: Avg
Halir is perhaps the most jovial of all the villagers, always striking up conversations with passers-by, sharing jokes and small talk. He is also one of the finest woodcrafters in all the Nelafayn Hundred, if not Kaldor itself. Halir’s works are always of the finest quality, and he creates them out of a deep love of his craft, never charging too much for his services.
Lumin takes a great deal of pride in boasting of Halir’s talents to other nobles, but the woodcrafter is far too modest to notice such accolades. Halir lives with his wife and young son.
19 HALF-VILLEIN (Stol of Arnelt)
Size: 7 ML: 65
Having experienced similar raids in the past, Stol is paranoid that a gargun attack might occur at any moment. He is very protective of his wife and their family of five.
20 VILLEIN (Tak of Ursen)
Size: 3 ML: 70
Tak and his wife lost a son to sickness over the winter. They are worried that their daughter is showing the same symptoms.
21 HALF-VILLEIN (Madin of Aldar)
Size: 2 ML: 95
One of the most skilled farmers in the village, Madin has a habit of extolling his own virtues a bit more than the other villagers would like. His wife dies many years ago, and his teenage son assists him in the fields.
22 HALF-VILLEIN (Shotro of Korlis)
Size: 4 ML: 75
Small of stature, but not of fortitude, Shotro works very hard to support his young family. His wife recently gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.
23 VILLEIN (Drosta of Aphren)
Size: 7 ML: 70
Drosta and his wife have five children, ages ranging between 2 and 8. They are all quite inquisitive, and often wander into the open doors of neighbour’s cottages.
24 PRIEST-PEONI (Forissa of Abren)
Size: 2 ML: 75
Forissa considers all of the inhabitants of the village to be her flock, and despite her youth treats everyone as a mother would her children. She recently hired a Jarin fellow named Guarin to assist with working her land. Guarin lives in a small woodshed attached to Forissa’s cottage.
Guarin is a mystery to most of the villagers. He does not speak Hârnic well, and generally keeps to himself. One of Drosta’s children [24] peeked into his open door one day, and spotted pieces of kurbul armour sitting in a corner, and a spear and roundshield propped against one wall.
This further fuelled the rumours surrounding the “foreign” man. Some have speculated about the nature of the relationship between Forissa and Guarin, but most of these rumours are, of course, absurd.
25 VILLEIN-REEVE (Arasis of Tobelin)
Size: 6 ML: 60
The Reeve of Bifyrd Manor is well respected by the other villagers, and while not the most skilled, he runs the manor effectively. Lumin gives Arasis free reign to make many of the decisions concerning the operation of the manor, and Arasis readily accepts all the advice he is given, especially from Ondren [15]. Arasis and his wife have four children, two of whom are adopted.
26 VILLEIN-WOODWARD (Irdar of Lynë)
Size: 8 ML: 65
People often comment that Irdar seems a bit muddleheaded, but no one in the village knows the local forests as well as him.
Much to the dismay of his wife and six children, Irdar often spends too much time in the forest, rather than tending to his fields.
27 HALF-VILLEIN (Joril of Asana)
Size: 2 ML: 65
Joril is a quiet man, often keeping to himself. He and his wife are getting on in age, but have never had children. It is rumoured that the couple came to Bifyrd after escaping from another, harsher master. Joril and his wife become quite defensive when asked about their past.
28 COTTAR (Alarn of Torela)
Size: 2 ML: 70
Known for his very large beard, Alarn is recognized wherever he goes. He and his wife have never had children, and often welcome Drosta’s children [23] for visits and meals.
29 COTTAR (Myrlen of Karis)
Size: 5 ML: 70
Myrlen and his wife are friendly folk, always welcoming visitors to their small cottage.
Their three children are the only villagers who have thoroughly explored the ruined watchtower and the caves beneath it (without the permission of their parents).
They have hidden a length of rope beneath some rocks in the ruins which they use to reach the caves. 30 HALF-VILLEIN (Barpan of Arion)
Size: 4 ML: 95
If a booming voice can be heard across the fields, it is likely that of Barpan, whose rich baritone carries many a song throughout each day of work. Barpan is a large man who escaped from Coranan where he was a slave and fought in the Pamesani Games. He found haven in Kaldor, and settled at Feron Manor, where he married and now has two young children. No one in the village doubts any of the stories of Barpan’s battles in the arena, for last year they witnessed him wrestle and kill a marauding wolf with his bare hands.
31 COTTAR (Erilëa of Onalsen)
Size: 3 ML: 55
Erilëa recently lost her husband as a result of an accident, and she and her two children are having a difficult time adjusting to their new life. The young widow is very worried about the future of her family, for she cannot care for her children and the farm on her own.
32 VILLEIN-WOODWARD (Mosa of Firin)
Size: 3 ML: 90
The forests of the region are well known to Mosa, but unlike his counterpart Irdar [26], Mosa prefers the warmth of hearth and home to the cold of the wood, and therefore limits many of his treks to within a day’s walk of the manor.
33 YEOMAN-BEADLE (Keleren of Hurl)
Size: 2 ML: 80
Keleren, like Yoreth [12], is skilled with the longbow. Yoreth sees a much younger version of himself in the amiable young man, and the two share a friendly rivalry, often finding innovative ways to test each other’s archery skills. Keleren was married last summer just after arriving at Feron Manor.
34 VILLEIN-REEVE (Ordi of Kysen)
Size: 8 ML: 90
While he performs his duties competently, Ordi is often hostile towards the other villagers of Feron, believing they are somewhat beneath his station. In truth he is a jealous of the power that Arasis [25] commands in Bifyrd, even though Ordi is the more skilled reeve. Ordi’s household includes his wife, three children, his brother, sister-in-law, and their infant child.
35 VILLEIN (Myranë of Erlaren)
Size: 5 ML: 55
Myranë’s heritage is not Hârnic, and his somewhat exotic appearance is very attractive to many of the women of the village. His wife is jealous of the attention he garners, and as a result she has few friends among the women of the manor.
Myranë and his wife have three children, ages 4, 7 and 9. The eldest, a girl, has inherited her father’s exotic look.
36 COTTAR (Orakal of Asandsë)
Size: 2 ML: 55
Appearing confused much of the time, Orakal is the subject of a great deal of gossip among the villagers. Some surmise that he is possessed by some evil spirit, or has been cursed for some past wrong. In fact, he suffered a head injury as a child, and as a result, he is somewhat dim-witted.
Orakal lives with his sister, who provides a stable home for him, allowing him to live a decent life despite his disability.
37 COTTAR (Pellir of Gwyffid)
Size: 2 ML: 70
Pellir and his wife have no children, and their primary pastime is surmising what it is that might be wrong with Orakal [36]. All of the various rumours concerning their neighbour’s affliction have originated from here.
38 HALF-VILLEIN (Gergyn of Elena)
Size: 3 ML: 85
Gergyn and his wife have a five year old son, who is active and keeps them quite busy.
39 HALF-VILLEIN (Orian of Kaindar)
Size: 6 ML: 95
One of the more skilled farmers in Feron Manor, Orian is a very quiet fellow and does his best to avoid speaking with others. His wife and four strong sons help make his small farm one of the more successful in the area.
40 COTTAR (Danaer of Narabor)
Size: 4 ML: 85
Danaer lives in a small cottage with his wife and young son and daughter. He always has a story to tell passers by, which usually is just embellished gossip about his neighbours.
41 HALF-VILLEIN (Meliren of Tyunë)
Size: 7 ML: 70
One of the larger families in Feron Manor, Meliren and his wife have 5 young children. They are wxpecting a new addition to their family later on in the summer. Meliren is quite a friendly fellow, but he hides a dark secret. A former brigand, he left his nefarious ways behind in an attempt to lead a normal life. So far he has been successful, but he expects that some day his past will catch up with him. His former colleagues are still searching for him, and will attempt to kill him if he is found out.
42 VILLEIN-HERDER (Bjarn of Dyrelis)
Size: 6 ML: 45
Bjarn is perhaps the most incompetent herder to be found in this region, but somehow he has had a great deal of success with handling the livestock of Feron Manor. This is perhaps due to luck, but the region does seem well suited to the herds, and in fact they are mostly able to tend to themselves.
The herdsman tries to be friendly with his counterpart at Byfird Manor, but Caran (16) considers him a fool and will have nothing to do with him.
Bjarn and his wife have four childrenm but only the eldest is currantly capable of helping with the herds and in the fields.
43 COTTAR (Yolian of Klevë)
Size: 2 ML: 85
Yolian and his wife were only recently married, and many of the villagers gossip about whether they should be marries at all, as both of them appear to be quite young.
The newlyweds are in fact in their late teens, but Yolian in particular appears barely older than many of the children in the village.
44 SALTER (Mird of Faleren)
Size: 2 ML: 95 Qual: ***** Price: High
Mird learned his trade in a coastal town in Rethem. He fled to the east seven years ago to evade subjugation by the Agrikan Church, eventually arriving in northern Kaldor.
A competent salter, Mird has few friends among the villagers. Many are wary of him, fearing that he is somehow still linked to the Agrikans. Mird, who is married and now has a young daughter, has learned to ignore the gossip of his neighbours, and is happy to lead aquiet and peaceful life.
45 VILLEIN (Ivrian of Kyrmalain)
Size: 4 ML: 70
Ivrian’s wife brews very potent ale, which he is quite fond of. Without the help of his two able sons, the fields would not be properly tended, as Ivrian is inebriated most evenings, and usually does not fare well the next day.
[1] Manor House
Bifyrd Manor is the only stone building in the village. Lumin is very particular about the state of his residence, and has hired additional domestic staff who work very hard to keep the manor looking it’s best.
Lumin occupies the large bedroom on the northern wall, while Inlysë and Myrel share the smaller one. When adequate funds are available, Lumin plans to add a second floor to the building. The chamberlain (Larith of Charion) sleeps in a curtained area in the hall.
Larith isn’t particularly skilled (ML 75), but he is notoriously nosey, and he keeps Lumin apprised of most of the goings on in the village.
[2] Kitchen
The manor is blessed with an excellent facility for food preparation, which caters to Lumin’s fondness for finer culinary pleasures. Little expense is spared when importing ingredients from around Hârn and, when possible, exotic foods from abroad. The cook and alewife sleep in a bunk bed along the south wall of the building. A trap door on the north wall leads to the cellar.
[3] Stable
The stable is a well maintained building that houses Lumin’s warhorse in the large stall, and three palfreys in smaller ones. The attached shed was originally built to house the ostler, but is now used as a workshop and for storage.
[4] Cottage
This small cottage is occupied by the bonded ostler, Dran of Rybel. Dran is a powerfully built man, capable of handling even the most difficult of mounts with ease. He is a competent ostler (ML 85) and generally has the last word in any matters concerning the stables. As well as his duties at Bifyrd Manor, Dran supervises the upkeep of the stable at Feron Manor, which is maintained by a stableboy.
[5] New Barn
This structure was built several years ago to hold additional demesne when the space in the old barn became insufficient. The addition to house the domestic staff was added just last year.
[6] Old Barn
This barn was one of the original structures built at Bifyrd Manor. It has seen better days and requires constant maintenance. Lumin plans to rebuild it, but only after renovations to the manor house are completed. Unfortunately, the structure may not last until that time comes.
[7] Manor House
Feron Manor is a small building containing only the hall and a bedroom for Saran. Until recently, the two domestic staff slept on the floor in the hall, but Saran added the small shed to the manor to provide marginally better accommodation for them. All food preparation is done in the hall, and the northwest corner of the room serves as a pantry.
[8] Cottage
Saran cares little for the matters of running a fief, and consequently his chamberlain (Indren of Ostal) enjoys a great deal of control over the workings of the manor. Indren lives in this cottage with his wife, who serves as cook, and their ten-year-old son, who is the stableboy for the manor.
Saran is quite often away from the manor house, either hunting with Lumin or spending time with his friend at Bifyrd Manor. The day to day workings of the manor are well tended to, however, as Indren is an exceptional chamberlain (ML 100). He watches over his young lord and the manor staff in a very paternal fashion.
[9] Stable
The stable currently houses only Saran’s warhorse. The attached workshop was used to store the demesne before the barn [10] was built. It is well stocked with various implements, but is mainly used for storage space. Dran [4], the ostler from Bifyrd Manor, supervises the work of the stableboy. Indren is quite persistent in his attempts to convince Dran to take on his son as an apprentice.
[10] Barn
The newly constructed barn provides storage for the demesne and other provisions. Occasionally, Saran has been seen receiving deliveries from merchants, which are stored in the barn. Rumours abound as to what these boxes might contain.

BIFYRD MANOR
FERON MANOR
