Ketto

Among the creaking hulls of great towering machines of death, in the pockmarked killing fields, the blood arenas of old; the young and unblooded sit with veteran elders, to paint, and sing and laugh.

Demographics

The government under the Shogunate ruled with an iron fist, the ruling class nigh untouchable outside of the field of honour. The vanishing middle class made up the bulk of the artisans and merchants, while the poor were cannon fodder for the ever hungry military industrial complex.   The toppling of the Shogunate and abolition of indentured servitude has also lead to an increase in social mobility, and efforts are being made towards dismantling the caste system, though things move slowly.   Now there is a strong split between the elderly and the young; the former, veterans of a jihad across half the system, now taken with agriculture, civil works and automation, the latter make up some of the most popular artists across the solar system.   Ketto is racially diverse though mainly through a history of colonialism, as such native Kettosians make up the bulk of the middle and upper class.

Government

The Shogunate was a military dictatorship, though they were nominally appointed by the Emperor as a ceremonial formality. The shogunate used the labour of its colonies to reach formidable naval strength, but it's real military strength were mechs.   Positions of any importance in the military or government where held exclusively by members of the ruling class, though technically any person was free to challenge someone in such position to duel, realistically challenging someone of a higher caste was taboo and in practise this rarely happened. That being said positions in the military changed so frequently that despite war-doctrine officially banning duelling in wartime many political analysts believe that a key reason for the fall of the shogunate was the tenuous position of governmental and military leadership.   In the age of the Resplendent Accord, the Council or Tranquillity rules, a house of representatives elected through "proportional representation", though the only people chosen by the council are allowed to run in council elections. The current Council head is the warrior poet and duellist that killed the Shogun.
