Hallbefeld
Overview
Hallebfeld is a city in province of Amersham. The city sits within the large wall that cuts through the Beresto Mountains. The city is densely populated, holding the highest population per square mile of the country. The Road of Gold is the only way to reach Amersham by land and cuts through the heart of the metropolitan area. The city and it's walls lie on the border between Vinmur to the east and Sherpmel to the south. The mountainous terrain makes travel to it difficult but the complex architecture of the city and magical sigils keep the city itself protected from the harsh weather of the mountains.
The city was founded to act as a shield for Amersham during the War of Unification . The land was given to the High Mage Zaubeneir with the condition that he create a way to keep the other countries to attack Amersham directly. Zaubeneir created a massive wall with a city nestled along it to shield the province. In exchange for protecting Amersham from attack, Zaubenier was allowed to run the city however he saw fit. It is now known for its unique governance structure including a community driven criminal justice system called the Grand Fate and freely giving out knowledge and medical aid to those who seek it. Since the High Mages passing, rule of the city has been passed through the Zaubeneir family line, with the High Mage's great-great-granddaughter Norfane Zaubeneir currently presiding over the city.
In addition to its unique governance Hallebfeld is also known for its sprawling markets. The city is home to various districts sporting a mixture of exotic and extraplanar entities all selling goods from their various homelands. This variety in inhabitants has led to a surge in cross pollination of the arts. While the districts can be secluded to outsiders the people of the city are fiercely protective of their own and will defend the inhabitants of Hallebfeld and Amersham as true patriots. It is said anything that is desired can be found in the city for the correct price.
The amount of open information and specialized markets has led to many people believing that they may do as they please in the city without consequence. This however is not the case and the city takes its judicial system very seriously. The entire city is encased in magic to compel honesty and the local population plays an active role in criminal trials. While some people are able to skirt around th/e law here they are the exception not the rule even they will eventually face the consequence of their actions.
