Affront No. 2 - New Babel

One of the Seven Affronts, this colossal tower lies in the near the center of the earth, almost 1/5 of the world's population residing within its intimidating walls. As with the other structures of its nature, no one is entirely sure of its origin, nor how high the tower actually goes, but the secure structure invited a nomadic sect of humanity to consider it a home worth cultivating.   The tower is divided into a countless stack of floors, each having a ceiling equal in height to that of an average chapel's. There may be minor differences in shape, but all floors follow the same general circular formula. A long, winding staircase constantly lines the walls. This consistency holds fast until venturing past the 170'th floor. This floor is the last of which that features comprehensive renovation that facilitates human residence, and the last its inhabitants and any visitors are permitted to visit.

Purpose / Function

Following the demons' exile from heaven and the deprivation of their wings, they used the last remnants of their powers to build the Affronts; massive structures constructed to subvert their punishment. New Babel was a tower constructed to pierce the heavens and allow the demons to reclaim their seat next to God. Whether they were successful in this endeavor or not, humans have taken the structure as their own.

Alterations

Since its first conversion into a habitable space, numerous improvements have been made to the safety and comfort of New Babel. Light fixtures were among the first touches to decorate the walls, natural sunlight shining through the slits in the tower only providing so much. Although work was originally restricted to the floor one lived in and its neighbors, an elevator system was eventually put into place, utilizing dozens of lifts to transport workers and visitors to where they were needed.

Architecture

The tower follows the tenants of angelic architecture (similar in form and function to brutalism geometrical, unadorned and obsidian-black with a metallic sheen, inside and out. Each floor of the tower is marked by a relatively thin slit, only about two feet wide, that acts as a window of light. Every few dozen floors has a balcony of sorts, with a gap in the tower's walls allowing for traversal along the outer walls of the tower. These balconies rarely go up or down more than a single floor, and seem to only serve a cosmetic purpose.
