God

Gods are incredibly powerful beings in the Grey Matter series. Unlike most religions' gods, however, the term 'god' is more of a role than a single entity.   The word 'god' is lowercase when referring to the species or godhood. It is uppercase when referring to the roles (God of Comedy, for instance).   Unmarked Spoilers from here on out.   There are four godly roles in Grey Matter:
  • The God of Comedy
  • The God of Tragedy
  • The God of Death and Endings
  • The God of Cycles and Rebirth
Comedy and Tragedy oppose each other, as do Death/Endings and Cycles/Rebirth. However, this does not always imply hostility between the opposite gods.

Civilization and Culture

History

Each god has a different method of attaining and losing godhood.   The God of Cycles and Rebirth is the longest lasting god; it is assumed Cycles has had this role before written history began. Every so often, Cycles 'renews' itself and takes on a new form, but it is still Cycles. The exact mode of godhood attainment and loss is unknown for this role. However, Cycles cannot be killed by conventional means and will renew if anyone tries.   The God of Comedy is the second longest lasting god. Millieda has had this role for about 80 to 100 years (on Earth, as time varies elsewhere). Gods of Comedy only lose their godhood by dying in a manner that's funny to them. The role is then filled by someone who is able to spread joy, hope, and laughter in times of great sorrow--this method of godhood attainment lead Millieda to believe she was actually the God of Tragedy, as she was most active in wars, mass deaths, and the like.   The God of Death and Endings is the third longest lasting god. Rune has had this role for about 20 to 30 years (again, on Earth). Unlike the rest of the gods, the person who attains this godhood must be dead. Similar to Ghosts, Gods of Death died in unfortunate or unresolved ways. Rune and other gods in this role often seek justice for their deaths and create their own afterlives to cope. Godhood is lost when the god finally moves on, though this takes a lot more effort than a Ghost.   The God of Tragedy is the shortest-lived god. These gods inevitably die tragically or with absolute destruction, usually at the hands of what they create or focus on. A common fallacy of these gods is to believe they are exempt from the fate of previous Gods of Tragedy. For instance, Mint died after being consumed by rust and decaying like the world she studied.
