Beralbar

One of the largest ports in the region, Beralbar is a hub of industry, in particular metalworks.

Demographics

The population of Beralbar is mostly an even mix of Humans, Dwarves, and Gnomes. The majority is employed in the metal industry and supporting economies, such as trade.

Industry & Trade

Beralbar thrives on its impressive amount of furnaces and metalworks, fueled by a network of mining operations across the Whitetos Mountains. Raw materials are processed into a vast variety of metal objects, which are shipped out to much of the known world. A large harbour with numerous dockyards supports this process. Beralbar products are seemingly plain at first glance: most of it is unadorned with gems or other materials. However, the smiths of Beralbar pride themselves in their ability to construct elegant metal objects with intricate line work and playful engravings.   As the foremost supplier of metal products, Beralbar is a bustling trading port with several major trading houses. Most of the products are more austere than their counterparts in other cities: the locals seem to prefer function over form.   Beralbar imports most of its food, as the surrounding countryside is ill-suited for farming. A small fishing fleet goes out into Dargate Bay, but their catch is mostly meager: fish is a luxury for the majority of the population. A staple of the local diet is the mushroom stew, made from a variety of mushrooms and fungi found in the old mines beneath the city. Among outsiders the stew has a rather nasty reputation, as those unaccustomed to it often find themselves on the toilet for long periods of time - an unfortunate reaction colloquially known as Zuggtmoy's Revenge.

Geography

Beralbar lies at the end of the Whitetos Mountains, where the Witwater River flows into the sea. Part of the city is built into the mountains itself, with surrounding hills providing a natural fortification.

Natural Resources

Beralbar was built on rich iron and coal deposits, though most of the ore underneath the city has been mined long ago. The Witwater River however connects Beralbar to a large part of the Whitetos Mountains, where numerous mining operations are still active, providing the furnaces and metalworks with a steady stream of fuel and materials. The narrow strip of land between the Whitetos Mountains and Dargate Bay provides room to a few farms, mostly keeping lifestock because of the poor quality of the ground.
