Caldamin
A small mining town of approximately 500 residents (mostly human and dwarves) in northernmost Andoran, nestled between the foothills of the Five Kings Mountains to the west, the Verduran Forest to the east, and the Dragonfly River to the south. This otherwise unremarkable settlement has become somewhat of a tourist attraction of late, due to the presence of two beloved, extraordinary creatures who have overlapping territory nearby: a red reaver named Auger and a gray render called Shepherd . Auger is usually indifferent to most of the townsfolk, but enjoys the landscape of the surrounding area. Shepherd is known to be very protective of the residents, but occasionally disrespects his surroundings, uprooting trees and tossing boulders for fun. Both of them enjoy the music and performances of the townsfolk, and for some unknown reason, they both violently dislike the color orange. These two beasts regularly battle each other beyond the town walls, and the fights are of such ferocity that locals and tourists alike gather to observe their clashes like spectators at a boxing match.
Recently, a great many bards, traveling performers, and thrill-seekers have descended upon Caldamin to test their talent at soothing the beasts when their tempers flare. While several musicians have joined forces with the guard to keep the surrounding roads peaceful and safe, a number of scoundrels have instead taken to loitering about town, drinking and causing trouble, much to the chagrin of the locals.
While enjoying some downtime at Shepherd's Reach Inn, the party threw back a few pints to the sound of Edferth Reinhardt's accordion-heavy tavern music. A Pathfinder Society scribe named Tamandra Cotts has taken up temporary residence, on assignment to study the town's two beloved beasts. Balda Slaghammer, a member of the dwarven Ninth Battalion, arrived and enlisted a band of adventurers to help clear the town's mine of rust monsters and other threats. During their excursion, they discovered the remains of a lost dwarven expedition, and a possible pathway to the mysterious Darklands. In speaking with Oswald Rolar (the town's head smith) about modifying a salvaged large adamantine battleaxe, the party struck a bargain - Oswald would attempt to re-forge the rare material into a new weapon at reduced cost, if the party would help him secure a site for his Lightning Forge, a home-made copy of an ancient dwarven crafting tool. Wanting to bolster his reputation, the smith is eager to attempt the procedure, but cautions our adventurers: success is not guaranteed!
