Colepios

Located on the island of Crete in Greece, the small town of Colepios is one of its best-kept secrets. It has clear skies and sunny days year-round, and its olive oil and wine are treasured in local restaurants and specialty circles overseas. Fifteen years of war have ravaged the region, but Colepios has made a stunning recovery, aided in no small part by the gifted.   Greece stayed neutral in the first few months of what would later be known as the Great War. It had no skin in the game, and neither did their allies. Eventually, however, one of their allies’ allies declared war on a nation already in the fight, and the nation marched to their aid. Colepios found itself under a new master nearly every other month in those early years. As the war dragged on, however, the town returned to Greek control and remained there.   The Great War had its fair share of deserters. Ordinary soldiers sick of endless war, the gifted who refused to be pawns spreading death and destruction for their nation, and far less savory types fled to Colepios. The punishment for non-gifted deserters was death. The punishment for gifted was far worse. Colepios’s people had long since become acquainted with the horrors of war. They could not stand by and do nothing.   And so the wine cellars were repurposed as safehouses for the fleeing and the wounded. Any settlement found to be sheltering gifted faced the same punishment as one which had stolen military weaponry. They were seen as little else back then, but Colepios sheltered them anyway.   Their care did not go unreciprocated. As soon as they had recovered sufficiently, many of them, gifted and non-gifted alike, threw themselves into different efforts to protect the town. When the war ended, a sizable number of the gifted chose to stay in Colepios, using their powers to help the land recover and ensure plentiful harvests.
