Sometime in the millions of years between the KT Mass Extinction and the Ice Ages, dragons develop from unthinking animals into a species of reasoning beings. They begin to develop culture, language, and civilization.
Main timeline of historical events for the world-setting, both before and after the formation of Genesis as a distinct world.
Also referred to as the Reign of Flame. This period is distant prehistory, with no well-defined dates and much of its information handed down as legends and myths. During this period only the dragons and the gods exist.
Sometime in the millions of years between the KT Mass Extinction and the Ice Ages, dragons develop from unthinking animals into a species of reasoning beings. They begin to develop culture, language, and civilization.
As the dragons develop consciousness and thought, the gods are created to fulfill their unanswered needs. The Great Gods are first and oldest, with the rest of the pantheon appearing more over time as need for them arises. The Skinwalker is generally believed to have predated this creation and his origins remain unknown.
Dragons spread across the globe, holding complete dominance as the only sentient species. They form into two loose factions, Northern and Southern, which collectively form a Dragon Empire.
Conflict between the rival factions of the Empire breaks out into open war, destabilizing the planet's climate through massive overuse of magic and kicking off a series of ice ages. The draconic population as a whole is decimated, and the Southern faction all but completely eliminated.
Starting sometime in the cycle of Ice Ages, shapeshifters and elves develop and spread in the power vacuum left behind as the dragons decline. Despite harsh climate conditions, with each thaw the new races grow stronger.
Originally developing as a race in the safety of the Worldshadow, small sects of the first vampires break off and begin living in the daylight world. They slowly adapt to life in the light and become the first elves.
In a bid to overthrow the time god Lore, five vampire siblings consume most of their own kind in order to become near-divine beings known as the Blood Gods. They fail in their attempt and are driven from the Worldshadow into the far reaches of the Evernight.
In the centuries following the Blood War, the gods resolve to take less of a direct hand in the affairs of mortals. The way they exert their will and influence changes, and they begin to grant power to their devoted followers who are then intended to act as their mortal agents.
Coronis, the first and only truly permanent shapeshifter stronghold, is formed around and under the Crowned Mountain deep within the Amazon Basin. The site is supposedly gifted to them by the Skinwalker and protected by a constant veil of mists; the natural way in which shapeshifter settlements are constructed means that it proves inconspicuous enough to avoid being a target of attacks by dragons.
Early elves lived a largely nomadic lifestyle similar to shapeshifters, due to the constantly shifting climate and what remains of draconic dominance. At some point during the Cold Years, a faction of the elves discover an intensely magical subterranean lake that they name the Darkmere and form a semi-permanent settlement around it. It proves a defensible enough location for elves to begin to develop a more solid foothold from which to start spreading as a nation.
A rogue faction of the waning Dragon Empire triggers a cataclysmic volcanic event in an attempt to wipe out the fledgling human race. Showing their anger, the gods turn their backs on mortals entirely for several years. The guilty faction of dragons is destroyed by the rest of the empire, but the repercussions of the Silent Years are seen as a final condemnation to a slow slide into extinction.
Recognizing humanity’s inherent potential for magic, the Great Gods approach the Skinwalker to forge a handful of human bloodlines into potential conduits for Fate’s power. The Reaper line begins here, in what humans would consider their distant prehistory, and quickly becomes a symbol and reminder of the gods’ power on Earth.
A new subspecies of elves develop from a mingling of elven and shapeshifter bloodlines. Calling themselves Wave Walkers, they consider themselves elven but are culturally and visually distinct from other elves.
This is the start of history in the wake of the Dragon Empire. Elves rise to power, with shapeshifters living alongside them in the wild places of the world and vampires existing in the shadows. As time passes humans develop enough to begin to take their place among the balance of power, quickly growing in prominence as their numbers expand.
As human civilization begins to develop into a recognizable form, an unknown mage summons and fails to restrain a demon of immense power known as the Immortal Flame. Unrestrained, the demon has three sons with a human woman before being banished back to its home by the Jackal Reaper. His sons go on to father both the naga and the Seraphs.
Having protected the fledgling Seraphs for many generations, the naga are betrayed by their kin and longtime allies and hunted to near-extinction. With the Seraphs aggressively pursuing them and equally despised by the other races for their previous allegiances, the naga are driven into exile and seem to vanish from the records.
The six major elven kingdoms of the time (Darkmere, Starfall, Fyrenstone, Silverleaf, Shadowheart, and Iram) formally ally themselves into a single coalition under a High King/High Queen, agreeing to an agreement of nonviolence and solidarity in the face of the growing human population. The most notable inclusion is the Wave Walker elves of the far north, who to this point have been historically distant from the rest of the elven kingdoms.
A great sea monster terrorizing the coastline of the Mediterranean is in actuality Kar’kess, the first male naga and an immortal. He is defeated by the Bull Reaper, and rather than being killed is magically sealed away in an unknown location.
One of the earliest mixed human/elven settlements, the city of New Avalon is formed around the lake that holds the isle known as Avalon. Though the area has long been held sacred by elves and shapeshifters, it takes on new significance as a city devoted to the many gods and becomes a source of unprecedentedly relaxed coexistence between the races.
The Eagle Reaper marries a human woman and fathers four half-Reaper children who are born with natural shapeshifting and an affinity for weather magic. Their descendants become a distinct race of powerful, bird-formed magic users known as Stormcrows.
In defiance of the tattered remains of the Empire’s authority, a powerful rogue dragon named Charyxistryx rampages across the Pacific Northwest. He is confronted and defeated by Jhayden Anurios in alliance with the Dragon Queen’s forces.
The Dragon Queen dies with no successor, marking the official end of the royal lineage and the final collapse of any last remnants of the Empire’s power.
Jhayden Anurios passes the mantle of Reaper to Wynn Khajib and is killed days later by Seraphs. Grief over her mentor’s death causes Wynn to begin to investigate how firmly the Seraphs are entwined in human power structures, setting her down the path for what will eventually become the War of Dark Flames.
Following aggressive Seraph interference behind the scenes of the Crusades, Wynn declares unofficial war against the family and their allies. Her assault is backed by many factions within Genesis; the Seraphs' influence in Europe and the Middle East is drastically reduced by the end of this period, but tensions between humanity and the magical races is pushed to a breaking point.
Starfall, one of the four remaining major elven seats of power, falls to a massive assault by Seraphs and their allies; considered one of the greatest tragedies of the Unified Era. While the vast majority of the city's people are found dead from an apparent mass suicide on the night of the city's fall, the king and many of the city's warriors vanish without a trace.
Disheartened by the rising strife between humanity and the other races in the aftermath of the War of Dark Flames, Wynn Khajib makes a bargain with the gods to make a refuge for those who no longer belong to what will be known as the Old World. Over the course of one year, those who want a home away from the encroaching of humanity prepare magical groundwork to mark the boundaries of their new lands.
At the expense of most of her remaining lifeforce, Wynn Khajib channels the power of the gods to break away the pre-prepared shards and form a new realm known collectively as Genesis.
The Shattering marks the start of Genesis as a distinct realm, still intertwined but separated from the Old World it was formed from.
As Genesis flourishes, Wynn Khajib is troubled by the separation between the different shards. To remedy the problem, she builds an incredible system of magical pathways that she calls the Painted Ways to link them together, but dies before ever having the chance to reveal its existence.
The Black Death sweeps Europe in the Old World, proving unexpectedly virulent even in the face of magical healing. Travel between the shards of Genesis comes to an almost complete halt to try and keep the disease out of the closed environment within the shards, and begins an enduring trend of self-reliance and reduced interaction.
Vampire activity in the Old World increases dramatically. Tension and conflict between different clans also rises, building towards a breaking point as some clans seem to inexplicably begin to set aside the code of secrecy and others attempt to suppress them in retaliation. As time passes, the instigators begin to be revealed as followers of the Bound One, the sealed and forbidden fifth vampire god.
Followers of the Bound One openly eliminate another vampire clan, turning the conflict into an open war spilling out with little regard for secrecy or human life; a few clans strive to try and cover the fallout, but this becomes increasingly difficult as the struggle escalates. The Reaper Rei Arren meets with vampire forces in an unprecedented alliance for the sake of trying to resolve the rapidly deteriorating situation and preventing calamity.
The Bound One is re-sealed in the Crossroads, a place whose location is known only to Rei Arren. He takes the secret to his grave.
In the face of another great outbreak of plague fanning old resentments between Genesis and the Old World, the former Reaper Fa Mei Ling uses her powerful talents as a healer to help bring the outbreak under control. Despite the protection of her brother Fa Zhouhui, the two are attacked by Seraphs and the ensuing fight sparks a devastating fire that guts the city of London.
Following their migration to the newly formed North American colonies in the Old World, a conflict arises between two rival families of powerful spellcasters and leads to a dangerous breakdown in the Old World’s carefully enforced secrecy surrounding magic. Members of the Watchers step in to force a peace, but the non-magical human communities suffer through the Salem Witch Trials and a general period of increased paranoia and suspicion.
Unrestrained use of magic in the longstanding conflict between spellcaster families triggers major seismic activity in North America. The incident draws the attention of the Seraphs, who spend several decades drastically thinning the population of magic-blooded humans in America.
In an unprecedented attack, a shard of Genesis is invaded and the elven city of Silverleaf destroyed by Seraph forces. The crown prince and princess of the city, both children, are the only survivors of the royal family and escape to the safety of Darkmere.
Following the death of his family at Seraph hands, Kenneth Hunter sinks into near-madness and begins a relentless onslaught against his enemies. Seraph forces are massively reduced, culminating in the death of Joshua Seraph.
Artemis Hunter is captured by the Seraph family, under the leadership of Darius Seraph, and is intended to be sacrificed to simultaneously destroy the Reaper line and resurrect the Immortal Flame. At the moment of truth friendship proves stronger than blood ties, and Darius helps the Reaper escape while renouncing his own leadership and heritage.
The elven city of Darkmere comes under siege multiple times, attacked by a mixed host of Seraphs and demons led by Cyrus Seraph under Ak’har Seraph’s mentorship. Despite widescale destruction, both assaults are defeated by the city’s forces; in the second, final siege the elves of Darkmere find themselves aided by the remnants of the army of Starfall.
The Immortal Flame, demon god of the Seraphs, is unleashed on the world before being killed by Artemis Hunter and Darius Seraph working in cooperation. Its death throws the Seraph family into complete disarray, starting a crisis of faith that will cause an eventual schism in the formerly unified group. The presence of the Flame utterly shatters the veil of secrecy regarding the presence of magic, causing widespread turmoil in the Old World.
Knowledge of the existence of the Painted Ways, rediscovered by Artemis Hunter, begins to spread between the different shards of Genesis. In the wake of the Flame’s very public death, their existence as a secure way to travel directly between shards proves more crucial than ever.
With Darkmere still in disarray in the aftermath of the sieges, many of the survivors of Silverleaf choose to unite with the survivors of Starfall and reclaim Silverleaf itself. The task of rebuilding the fallen city begins. Alysa Silverleaf is heavily involved in the process, continuing to serve as a source of strength and pride for her people.
In the Old World, a bizarre affliction called the Illuminada begins to affect vampires. It’s suspected to be engineered due to the specificity of how it acts, and proves to be the first incident of human experimentation specifically targeting one of the magical races as part of rising fear against the presence of magic.
With ongoing unrest over the presence of magic in the Old World, incidents of seeming wild magic occurrences begin causing widespread destruction. The culprit appears to be a ‘drug’ called Icarus, being peddled to curious Old World humans as a way to unlock their magical potential but resulting in disastrous consequences; it’s discovered that it’s being distributed by followers of the Bound One to foment chaos as a cover for another attempt to free their god from Crossroads. Their uprising is thwarted by J’alla Silverleaf, and the Bound One’s prison is relocated again to keep it secure.
