Ember Character in Gates of Eternity | World Anvil

Ember

Exarch of Authority, First Exarch, Imperial God, Honourable Lord, Divine Emperor.

Ember, known also as an Exarch of Authority, he is the chief deity of the White Pantheon of the Imperial Religion. He is also one of the three primeval entities (together with Primordial - who was slain to create the World Engine - and the Tyrant) who created the multiverse as a whole, bringing an end to the Era of Silence. This origin also makes him the most powerful High God of them all.   He almost never interfers in the matters of the mortals, leaving that to the legions of his servants and other Exarchs. If the imperialtheology is to be believed, he rules the Heavens from his throne at the uppermost level of the Tower of Flames. His residence, fortress and barracks where the souls of the bravest and most honourable warriors of the Imperial Religion reside together with Ember's servile daemons, eternally preparing themselves for the End of Days.

Divine Domains

Honour, Loyalty, Authority, and Imperium of Karadia.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Dragon head as seen from the side.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Ember's goals are, as in case of all gods, completely impossible to discern by humans. He seems to eternally prepare for the End of Days, acting in Real World just as much as it is needed to counter spread of the Black Pantheon. Thus he is among less 'seen' gods of White Pantheon.

Physical Description

Body Features

Nobody knows how Ember exactly looks like. Even normal High Gods are indescribable and unknown - and unlike them, he has an even more elusive and secretive origin. However during manifestations (typically during the Anointment of a new Chosen One) he will pick one of two looks. The first manifestation form is a massive dragon with its scales red (but outlined with gold) and crimson-red wings. The second form is a towering human in golden armor decorated with red flames, a golden crown on his head, and a burning cloak behind him.

Special abilities

Just as all gods, Ember is omnipotent and omniscient, his power over reality limited only by influences of other beings similar to his. He is more than capable of forging completely new reality with but a friction of power - after all Tower of Flames is practically a world, as 'real' for its inhabitants as 'real' world is for mortals.   As any god Ember isn't limited to 'today', as there is no 'today' for gods. They exist simultaneously in every 'now' of every 'today' from the moment the world is created to the moment of its eventual demise. The only reason they limit themselves to human concept of time is to interact with them without being too 'alien' for them.   Ember is also capable of creating literally unlimited numbers of daemons - not to mention as many types of them as he wishes. He could also create as many species in real life, but decided against it.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Ember was born in the mysterious Song Beyond Silence, a contemporary of equally mysterious Silence. It is unknown what spawned him, it's possible that he simply sprang into existence. At least one legend seems to state that both he and the Tyrant were offsprings (or autonomous parts) of the Primordial whom they slain (at its own insistence) to create the World Engine. In the end, however, any claim about the beginning of the Exarch of Authority is only a theory born of mortals' imagination.   After slaying the Primordial and creating the World Engine, Ember retreated onto his side of the Elemental Wastes, where he has created the Heavens. He used the power of the Engine to spawn first Exarchs, including Death, the Exarch of Passage whom he married and had several childs with (including several more Exarchs, and some Hierarchs). The Ember's rule was - and still is - long, just and fruitful.   His more-or-less cooperation with the Tyrant ended when Ember banished Shadow into Gehenna. Shadow rebelled, breaking the Gehenna in the process. Tyrant believes that it was a planned act of subversion, that Ember banished his child in order for it to split Tyrant's realm into pieces. Ever since then, there is only war between servants of Ember and Tyrant. Servile daemons of those two gods regard each other with nothing but utmost contempt.

Morality & Philosophy

Ember personifies specific form of morality that is typical for Imperium of Karadia. It can be summed up to - honour above all. Honesty, working hard, speaking and standing up for truth, obeying law (as long as it is just - if it isn't, it should be resisted), defending and caring for your family, doing what your country requires from you (as long as it isn't something dishonourable) - all of this is considered a foundation of honour as Imperium see it.   All men can be honourable. This honour isn't limited to knights or nobles. Ember is High God of both power (as in - being in power over men) and loyalty, of both servants and rulers. Hard working craftsman is closer to his heart than a noble that forsook his duty. Because for Ember social status is meaningless - what is really important is whether one lives honourably and fulfills their duty to the society.   What actions are considered dishonourable? Cowardice, of course. Avoiding your responsibilities as father, head of the family, or member of your social strata (for example nobles have more responsibilities than common farmers). Using power you have for your own enjoyment and good, rather than the common good. Being asocial, refraining from 'doing your part'. Lack of interest in the common good (including even such venial sins as not being interested in the politics of your country).   On the other hand, Ember is god of the Order alignment. He allows many things that would be unthinkable to gods of Radiance. After all, he is a moral and philosophical descendant of the gods of the old Itavian Republic. He has no problem with slavery - he will look down only on tricking someone into slavery or needless cruelty (though not with punishment for disobedience as long as it proportional to the 'crime'). He sees no issue with wars of conquest, as long as it's done for the greater good of the Imperium - which in the end means every war of conquest unless the other side is a former ally or signed a non-aggression treaty.   It is also a patriarchal god. Ember traditionally looks down on women as inferior to men. He acknowledges - and in fact celebrates - the exceptions, with at least some of his rare Chosen Ones being women. However, as a whole he is a High God of purely 'masculine' Honour. Of course, with a higher standing comes greater responsibility - overuse of your power is a domain of the Tyrant, and abusive husbands have no place in the Heavens. However a husband who lets his wife be in charge will be at the very least looked down upon.
