Ogres Species in Gates of Eternity [2.0] | World Anvil

Ogres

The ogres are the end result of the Xylian Dominion's second attempt to geneengineer a perfect servant species. Like their fellow giants they were designed with war in mind. However their first deployment turned out to be a spectacular disaster, as ogres were notoriously disloyal - they simply didn't see a reason to risk their lives for the Xylian Dominion, a side-effect of the failed hereditary mentalsculpt.   After that the ogres have spread throughout Karadia and Telya, and were busy living in small clans deep in the wilderness, avoiding the Dominion whenever and wherever possible. They lived very close to nature, which made them particularly vulnerable to the predations of the Wild Courts in the age after the fall of the Dominion.   This has changed to a degree when the Twilight War has redefined the entire imperial religion - the Nine Hordes have liberated many ogres, only to have them become their members immediately.   Today the ogres are spread between the armies of the Wild Courts, of the Nine Hordes and of the vassal states of the Grand Empire. They are dangerous melee combatants that tend to leave rather ascetic lifestyles and can often be seen fighting not for money but for food and alcohol, making them valuable (and cheap) addition to any army.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Ogres are essentially a horned humanoids growing up to anywhere between the 2,2 and 2,5 meters. They are tall, they are strong, they are incredibly resilient and have very good stamina - essentially an ideal warrior species, for as long as you give them a proper equipment and point towards the enemy. They take full advantage of their physical might, and enjoy using long reach weapons (especially the two-handed one) to cause some truly devastating damages to anyone in the vicinity.

Genetics and Reproduction

They can have children with other xylmade, but the result will usually be rather nasty - sterility and birth defects are almost always part of it. As a result, they tend to stick to their own. They can, however, have children with sufficiently supernatural mortal species (like changelings or high dragons) and spirits, although only the latter is a truly viable case.

Behaviour

The ogres need little. Their mentalsculpt, unlike the one applied to the giants, has managed to largely remain intact to this day, making all ogres disinterested in more complicated things. They aren't stupid, far from it - their intelligence is comparable to that of most elves. However, their interests and needs aren't.   Most ogres will be satisfied by having enough food and water (or alcohol), rarely finding it in themselves to pursue greater wealth or decadence. Their clothes are usually pretty simple too.
