SC2020 - The invisible cave

The Invisible Cave is home to many endemic species carried in by the waves millennia ago isolated and left to evolve and adapt to life in a cave pond. In the rocky coast of ######, there exist an entrance to a cave system, which can only be accessed when the tide is at its lowest. Within are several ponds and water passages left behind by the receding water. Near the mouth of the cave, the water in these ponds are refreshed and replaced twice daily as the tides comes and goes. Further in only the big tide reached them. As One gets even further into the cave, the water is replenished less and less often. There are even places where seismic shifts has left the ponds isolated, and the life that was trapped their

Geography

The cave system is a eroded deep into the cliff side through tens of thousands of years as the softer stone got washed away leaving crevasses that the water could then widen. During earthquakes parts of the cave that had been widen too much collapsed and the rumble blocked access from the water or completely isolated the cave. Most of these hollow rooms are lifeless, but a few managed to have the right combination of life to form a small ecosystem that through chance manged to adapt to the new conditions before all species went extinct.

Fauna & Flora

Khunuk

One of the highly isolated, yet reachable ponds is the spawning site of the Khunuk. The cave pond can only be accessed from the sea once a year, during the storm season, when the strong winds press water into the cave system and fills it to it's brims, completely flooding it. It is in this underground pond that the Khunuk lay their eggs, this is the only place they breed. The pond becomes so viscous with fertilized fish eggs that it seems more like gel than water.

Natural Resources

The eggs og the Khunuk are extremely rich in nutrition. They can be harvested and dried and serve as the perfect compact food for long journey, basically becoming everything you need to sustain yourself and nothing else.
