Jackara Jaymes's last letter to Draysen Corvo

Drays,

It pains me to think that this letter marks the last time I'll be able to speak to you, ever moreso as I can't do it in person, and look upon your peculiar face a final moment. But perhaps that's all the better, since we both know my weakness lay in your glances, disapproving or otherwise.

So please take these words as truth that I still must partake upon my duty as I see it must be done, and that my love for you has not diminished. But now our paths through the Desert have diverged, lovers or not.

Thus do not presume to take the words I last spoke to you lightly. The reckoning approaches yet. They will not be forgiven. For what they've done to my family; for what they've forced The Enclave to become. For what they've manifested, scapegoated and perpetuated in order to create, intentionally or not, the nightmarish horror that our world has become, all obfuscated by the bright sails and waxy shine of a Rail Titan. They all must be held accountable.

When we were young Rangers, we spoke of how idealism drew us toward the Enclave, and how that idealism was quickly shattered by the realities of politics in a harsh world, Dune Shadow Ranger or not. It's why we came to see deliverance within the myth of the Dune Ronen, as they had rejected the false compromises that the Enclave (and yes, the entire Free City of Salameer) had been obliged or forced to embrace beneath the Baronies' brutal ascendance.

But that rejection didn't lead to justice for the Oases Revolts, or all the dead rangers laid in the sand there. No, the Dune Ronen, in choosing chaos out of spite for the lies of order, have merely walked down a road toward masterless criminality. The Dune Ronen are wolves dejected from any pack but their own, defined and unified by nothing but their own nihilism. And now many of our Dune Ronen "brethren" find themselves making coin off the same despicable speculators that do the Baronies' biddings, they what crippled and compromised the Dune Shadow Rangers we both pretended to idolize as children; they who made the world the lie it is. The Dune Ronen have become a pathetic ideology with even more pathetic praxis.

I am not meaning to shame you. I understand why you've turned to the nihilism. You never really wanted to be part of anything; even the Dune Shadow enclave was just an escape for you. Following the same leaderless path of the Dune Ronen before us offers you the dream you always wanted - permission to do whatever you please, whenever you please, and to have no master telling you otherwise.

But do not interfere with me. The course upon which I have set myself cannot be changed. To use their language, the debt that Norther' Galeric has incurred will be paid in kind, with interest. I will not ask for your help, as I already know you refuse to give it. But you may notice many Dune Ronen around you disappearing. Whether they've joined my cause or died by my blade concerns you not.
Just take comfort in the knowledge that you'll never be on my list.

I truly hope your life is beautiful and joyous, as far as thats possible for people like us. I will dearly miss your peculiar face.

With love and conviction,
Jack
