The Academy of Heroes

The Academy of Heroes is a five year hero training program in Haven, Wellby that ensures the hero rank. Most notable heroes go through the academy because of its intense and multi-disciplined curriculum. However, it is incredibly intense. The Academy enrolls about 50 students each year, but graduation usually sees less than half.   Prospective boys give their name for consideration on their tenth, eleventh or twelfth birthday. You can apply at a later age, but it is rare. They must complete various tasks and observations before they are accepted. If accepted, they move to the Academy's barracks and begin their training with the start of the new year.   Year one teaches discipline. They study the Hero's Code (in essence, to help those in need, follow a moral code and strive to maintain peace in the Realm) and build physical strength.
Year two focuses on fighting. The boys learn various fighting styles and disciplines, including weapons and empty-handed combat. The second year is incredibly difficult and sees the largest drop-out rate.
Year three moves to mental disciplines. Students are given various trials to test endurance, patience, willpower, impulse control, etc. Year three also sees a significant amount of drop-outs, with the second-highest rate. Year three also includes learning basic field techniques such as first-aid and survival skills.
Year four is widely considered the most rewarding year. Students have mastered the basics of survival and have the mental and physical tools necessary to uphold the Hero's Code. Except one. Magic. Magic is not necessary to be a hero, but it can greatly aid the chances of survival and aid in quests that have magical components. They learn the basic runes and how to crudely imbue items with enchantments. (Most heroes do not learn enchanting to the level of eligibility for a Runeshaper, but there are a few.) They also learn the basics of potions, especially for the purpose of health and first aid, but occasionally some recipes for combat.
Year five is practical application. Students at this level are considered squires. All graduates from the Academy are required to mentor a squire every year. Students are required to complete five squireships in order to graduate and receive the rank of hero. Alumni heroes will submit a quest to the academy and select one person from the interested squires. Most quests are usually first tier, but there are exceptions.    After completing the five years, squires have a graduation ceremony in the Hero's Hall where they all awarded their Hero rank. They move out of the barracks and begin their lives as heroes.
