Union Military

The Union fields an impressive army. Before the global war, the Union maintained a fighting strength of approximately 5,000,000 individuals. During the conflict, the number of serving soldiers swelled as the offensives began. At war's end, the Union military had 500,000,000 serving combatants. While difficult to imagine, the planet of Fife is large, and the battlegrounds during the global war spanned thousands of square miles. It has been hypothesised that if Remilians did not reproduce in litters, rather than a single child per pregnancy as humans do, the conflict would have ground to a halt due to manpower shortages.

Structure

The Union military is a combined arms outfit, with no distinct branch for different theatre types (No Navy, Air Force, Regulars, Etc). A single organisation represents every area of military might, with only the command structure baring specialisation for theatre. The military is designed around a system of interchangeable, modular, units sizes that utilize a command structure that is highly variable. The basic fighting unit is the Squad. A squad comprises of 1 Servien (analogous to a sergeant), 1 Parva Servien (Sargent chosen by members of the squad), 1 Medicum (Medic), 1 LRG (Light repeating Gauss Weapon), 1 Sharp Shooter, and 5 Rifle Troopers. The next unit size up from a squad is an Epheborum. An Epheborum consists of 4 squads, containing 40 Soldiers, and is commanded by a Legatus. Next, there is a Vexillum. A Vexillum consists of 4 Epheborum; 160 Soldiers, and is commanded by a Veni. After the Vexillum comes the Phalanx. A Phallanx consists of 4 Vexillum; 640 Soldiers and is commanded by a Colonellus. Next, there is the Host. The Host is the major organisational unit of the Union military. A Host consists of 4 Phalanx; 2560 Soldiers and is commanded by a Generalis. Due to the vast scale of the global war, it was rare for a military unit of smaller size than a Host to be deployed to a specific area. As a result, there is often a great deal of fraternisation among the soldiers of a Host and they usually develop their own culture and value system. This is encouraged by command as it tends towards a certain kind of specialisation within a Host, providing an Etheriat with greater flexibility when constructing a Great Host for an offensive. After the Host structure, there is the Great Host. A Great Host is a collection of up to 100 Hosts, usually chosen by their overall commander, an Etheriat, for a specific campaign. While Hosts develop their own culture, Great Hosts are, relatively, temporary constructs, the unit only holding together as long as a specific offensive is taking place. It is not uncommon for Hosts within a Great Host to be rivals; when a large scale war takes place over a long time period, shared history and sometimes bitter feelings can develop between the various Hosts. Great Hosts are constructed with a single goal in mind: achieve an objective. Whether it is to take a specific piece of territory or destroy an enemy position, High Command places an Etheriat in command and presents them with the objective.

Culture

Every Host has its own take on training, behaviour regulations, combat styles, and values. Some value bravery above all else, others stamina and resolve. A Host will usually have a motto or a nickname that sums up their culture. For example, the 14th Host went by the title 'Falling Death', as they specialised in airborne deployment. Most of the Host and its hardware could be deployed via airship, parachuting down to deploy in difficult and dangerous terrain.

Assets

The strength of the Host System is that it is highly modular. At the Vexillum level, the soldiers within it can be specialised to perform specific roles. Most Hosts will have at least one Vexillum that provides artillery support, for example. This modular system applies to every kind of asset that a fighting force might need; engineers, siege specialists, communications experts, military police, Logistics specialists, and many more.
