Flora of the Frigid Tundra
Though the Frigid Tundra is locked in an eternal winter, that is not to say there are not plants that are hard enough to grow here. There are a few geothermal springs that allow more traditional plant life to thrive, the largest of which is in the center of the Forest. There are many plants that are only found in this region of the Feywild.
Locals will harvest it as as food. They have to be quick though, because the exposed water freezes over very quickly. Over time, many harvesters have lost their lives, appendages trapped within the ice, destined to suffer a slow and painful death.
The stalk of the plant can be ground into a paste that is bright red in color. Members of The Vo use this paste as part of their ritual face markings.
The resulting rocks, called Remnant Stones, are often blue, purple, or a dark green in color.
Hanging Moss
The harsh weather and limited sunlight can impact the growing cycle of plants in the area, causing it to take much longer to mature. Hanging moss makes themselves a secure foundation for the extended growth cycle in the lakes and rivers on the underside of the ice, fully submerged in the water.Locals will harvest it as as food. They have to be quick though, because the exposed water freezes over very quickly. Over time, many harvesters have lost their lives, appendages trapped within the ice, destined to suffer a slow and painful death.
Pualunt
Pualunt is a hardy plant with a stalk and a fluffy top, called the tuft. The poofy fibers on the top of this plant insulate the seeds, keeping them protected from the harsh winds. When the plant reaches maturity, the tuft dies, allowing the wind to blow the seeds across the tundra. Many inhabitants of the Frigid Tundra use the tuft on the top of the plant for candle wicks. Specially trained craftspeople can also spin it into a very fine thread for decorative embroidery. The stalk of the plant can be ground into a paste that is bright red in color. Members of The Vo use this paste as part of their ritual face markings.
Saxiphrage
The Saxifrage plant grows low and carpets the ground. it is a particular favorite of Aurochs, and the herds tend to migrate following the growth patterns of the plant. It has stubby waxy leaves that are no larger than a pixie's hand.Fireweed
Fireweed is often found close to the base of the few trees that grow here. it is a bright red and neon pink leaves. When cracked open, it releases an oozy sap that burns the skin of most creatures. When the sap is boiled it can be turned into a dye for textiles or paint. It is time-consuming to harvest and can be challenging to find, so it is an expensive commodity. The Elladrin of the Fortress of Frozen Tears are constantly in search of more.Mutation Plant
The brain-child of an Elladrin botanist with too much time on their hands, the mutation plant is a strange ivy that grows over rocks and stones. As the plant matures it saps minerals and elements from the rocks it grows upon. By the end of the plant's life cycle, the rock beneath has completely changed chemical makeup. The resulting rocks, called Remnant Stones, are often blue, purple, or a dark green in color.
