Volkov

The Volkovs are a traditional family of arcane Alchemists, and one of the few modern families who keep their art going. The Volkovs have been researching arcane alchemy for nearly 500 years, and have thus built a reputation that endures even after arcane alchemy has been largely discredited.
The Volkovs have become so influential in arcane alchemy that the term "The Volkovian Art" was coined as a less pejorative way to refer to arcane alchemy.

History

The Volkovs were originally a family from Anazan. They built a solid reputation there with there with their research in arcane alchemy (or at least their persistence on it despite numerous failures) and were among the richer non-noble families (they refused to enter marriage contracts with nobles, fearful of what their knowledge could do in the wrong hands).
In 1819 Anazan declared arcane alchemy unlawful, following a trend that had been growing in the continent after the revolutions that ousted the nobility from government. The Volkovs' reputation was not enough to save them from the law, so they decided to relocate rather than abandon their craft. They settled in West Tolona and lived there without incident until 1991, when a house fire supposedly caused by their alchemy killed all but the youngest Volkov.

Disbandment

The Volkovs were killed in a house fire that was allegedly caused by their alchemical experiments on 1st Iohrmes 1991. The only family member who escaped the fire was Ivan, the youngest child of the family, who was at school at the time of the fire. Ivan was 16 years old.
Ivan continued to practice arcane alchemy as a profession, but only because it was the only thing he knew what to do. He later married Wilhelm Naschtergale (also known as Dame Wilhelm Rottborne) and had five children with him. Because of what happened to his family, however, Ivan decided not to teach alchemy to his children.
And thus, after 500 years, the deepest knowledge of the arcane arts in the world was set to die with him. At least until Ivan's oldest child started dating an arcane alchemy fanatic...
