Maundring Sickness

An arcane virus of unknown origin. Research has not yet yielded an effective cure or preventative measure to the mind-warping effects of the Maundring Sickness.

Transmission & Vectors

Little is known. Close proximity to the infected is proven cause, but time has shown that it is not the only cause.

Causes

Unknown.

Symptoms

Degenerating mental state, causing hallucinations, dementia, both short-term and long-term loss of memory, and in later stages, seizures.    Some of those infected have had violent outbursts, harming themselves and others.   Usually begins with fever and chest pain. Difficulty breathing becomes more extreme as the illness progresses.

Prognosis

Dr Foster has published the following in a pamphlet on dealing with infected. The course of the sickness tends to be as follows: Stage 1- Fever, pain in lungs causing breathing difficulty. Stage 2- Mental symptoms manifest. Dementia, hallucinations and memory failure become more frequent and more pervasive. Hallucinations may be accompanied by misting of eyes. Respiration becomes more difficult. Those infected often do not recognize or respond to their caretakers at this point.  Stage 3- Weakness and total physical incapacitation alternates with periods of dangerous hostility and physical aggression. Breathing may be ragged at best during periods of muscular weakness. Stage 4- Symptoms compound. Pain in airways becomes unbearable. Due to mental atrophy, infected have previously believed those around them to be intentionally strangling them, even if there is no physical contact. Disorientation and confusion have caused fatal incidents at this stage.  Stage 5- Death. Resulting from altercations between infected or between an infected person and caretaker, or resulting from loss of cognitive function leading to deadly accidents. If sickness has progressed enough, this could also be caused by closure of airways or pain-induced seizure.
