Kalai, Village of
Kalai is a small mining village perched on the edge of the Earthfall Chasm, and it is the starting base of the campaign. It is the seat of Lady Sensé Champoux, the Thane of Kalai and the Warder of the Deeps.

Government
Kalai is officially ruled by Sensé Champoux II, daughter of the original founder. Next in line is her husband Lucas, followed by her daughter Clarity Champoux (age 17 in CE 1005). The Thane is advised by Constable Sir Rolf Idrisson and Theodandros, sage and longtime friend of Sensé Champoux I, founder of the city.
At the start of the campaign (4 Avril, CE 1005), the Thane and Lord Lucas are absent from Kalai, having been called away by the Sheriff of of Boulais in Lorinne for an emergency council in early Novembre. Lady Sensé left Sir Rolf in charge, as Clarity is still in her minority. The Baroness has not returned nor sent word back in nearly six months, and people are starting to whisper. However, until a month or so ago, the passes and mountain trails have been nearly impassable due to an unusually cold and snowy winter, so perhaps Her Ladyship has been delayed by the weather...

Defences
Most of the buildings in Kalai are sited on one of several great circular plazas, leveled and paved centuries ago for some other purpose, but there is no wall that defends the city nor any type of siege engine or artillery.
The Thane has ten gallants who are called Companions. Six of them, however, accompanied the Thane and Lord Lucas and have likewise not returned.

Industry & Trade
Extensive underground softsteel mine (Wheal Wisdom). Softsteel is a silvery metal much lighter and more flexible than iron. It never rusts, and can be fashioned into thin sheets or even poured into almost limitless shapes. It does not take an edge at all, however, being much too soft.

Timber frame cottages with stacked stone foundations and low walls; thatched roofs. A few stone structures (watchtower, temple, winder house for the mine) ruined from the Carolingian era (or earlier)
Geography
Kalai sits at the top of an edge of the Earthfall Chasm at 6,500 feet of elevation. The Chasm plunges nearly to sea level beneath the village.
Natural Resources
Wood from the forest, alpine grazing for livestock, softsteel mine, White Flume, a fast-flowing stream for water power), deer and coneys (a hyrax-like rodent) for wild game.
