Mithril

Mithril, (also spelled mithral) also known as truemetal among the dwarves, was a precious metal produced from ore found in the Underdark as well as mountain ranges in certain areas of Iondra.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Mithral ore appeared as a silver-and-black mineral in its natural form, and became a shining silvery-blue when it forged.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Mithril reacts with oxygen at 1,400 °C to form mithril dioxide, but reacts very slowly with water due to a protective oxide coating that prevents further reactions. Mithril is extremely resistant to corrosion, even more so than titanium.

Compounds

Mithral can be combined with steel (varying alloys of iron and carbon) to derive adamantine if one has no access to adamantite ore, but this process is both difficult and known only to a very few dwarves, who do not perform it for nondwarves unless there is a very good reason.

Geology & Geography

Mithral is usually found in veins in the underdark and in the Ironcap mountains in Iondra.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Mithril's nearly unmatched strength and astounding light weight, lends itself very well to use in both armour and weaponry. It's common in blades and firearm ammunition, but significantly less common in war hammers and other blunt weapons as a heavier material lends itself better to those weapons.

Industrial Use

The dwarves of Sugg Kugarr use a special forge to make mithril dust which they use to coat their weapons and armour. This method isn't as effective as making the weapons out of solid mithril, but are much stronger then regular steel.

Refinement

Mythril ore needs to be baked in temperatures of above 1,500°C to

Distribution

Trade & Market

Mithril is extremely rare and exotic, only found by the dwarves of Sugg Kugarr and those daring enough to venture beneath the surface and into the underdark.
