Street Hands

Hammar is overflowing with unsavoury and criminal activities of various organizations. The people working on the streets have developed a series of signals to communicate effectively, while keeping their intentions hidden from potential targets or agents of the law.

Basics

Greetings

The first and most important thing is to be able to identify a fellow clandestine worker, so as not to interrupt their current project. This is done through the regular greeting of a raised right hand with a few alterations.
  • One of the thieving craft pursuing a mark will press their thumb to the palm of the same hand.
  • Someone whose profession involves a bit more brutality, and are on the job, keep their thumb and little finger apart from the others. This way their friends know to keep to their business.
  • A charmer of the higher classes will touch their collarbone with their left hand while the right one is raised. Seeing this their colleagues will know to play along with whatever is said.
  • Sales people of illicit goods tug on the front of their clothing when they are harking special wares for special customers.

Warnings

Everyone might identify a raised index finger as a warning but this is difficult to do while remaining covert. Individual groups may have their own warning signs but as a general rule the people of the streets tilt their heads to the left. This can come with a variety of additional gestures to indicate different things.
  • A wave of their hand indicates the opposite direction of the danger.
  • A wink indicates that the danger is to them and they require help.
  • If their left hand in on their hip they require no assistance, and you should stay out of their way.
  • Touching their nose is a silent suggestion for you to back off, or abandon your current path. This can also be used as a mild threat.
  • If they pull their earlobe they want you to come around by another way.
  • If they are touching a weapon, or something that can be used as a weapon, they are about to start something (usually a fight).

I love how this language is both practical and can be developed to incorporate more and more meanings and warnings. I really found it interesting and fun to imagine how individuals might execute the signals in their own style that reflects their personality or to place additional emphasis on what they are communicating - or maybe to share a joke or two.
