Alchemist
"The true magic of alchemy lies not in the powders we create, but in the insights we gain as we sculpt our fate with intention and passion."
Alchemy is a highly esteemed profession that requires years of study, typically reserved for high-class citizens or nobles. The education of an alchemist encompasses subjects such as chemistry, metalworking (particularly with Gold), and medical studies that focus on human anatomy and surgical procedures. Alchemists are often sought for their medical expertise, which leads various military regiments to enlist them as combat medics. Due to the high demand for their skills, alchemists have no difficulty finding positions that align with their specific goals and agendas. There are two main branches of alchemy:
Enchanting:
Alchemists can harness the magical properties of gold to enhance items. They achieve this by creating specific runes on gold inlays on the item using Alchemical Compounds, a process known as enchanting. Enchanting an item is time-consuming; it can take an experienced enchanter up to a week to plan the runes and mix the necessary alchemical compounds.
While it is possible to enchant people, it is highly dangerous. This process involves coating the bone with liquid gold, allowing it to cool, and then scribing runes on the gold. This technique is often referred to as "Coating." If successful, the patient may experience side effects such as hallucinations, paranoia, or even sepsis. Because each enchanter may use different runes or a unique mixture of alchemical compounds, the resulting enhancements can vary in strength.
Aurei often seeks out enchanters to help unlock their full potential or achieve further enhancements. Interestingly, for reasons not fully understood, Aurei have a much higher chance of survival with little to no side effects from the Coating process.
Powder Making:
Alchemists possess the remarkable knowledge to concoct Powder, a carefully crafted blend of diverse alchemical compounds. This potent mixture has proven invaluable, finding its way into numerous applications, most notably in firearms and artillery. Its explosive power and versatility have made it an essential component in the advancement of weaponry and the art of warfare.
Each alchemist possesses a unique formula for their powder mixtures, resulting in a wide spectrum of quality and performance. Some concoctions can be particularly volatile, adding an element of unpredictability to their craft. This individuality in their recipes not only reflects the alchemist's knowledge and experience but also significantly influences the effectiveness and safety of the munitions they help to create.
