The Endless Purple

The Endless Purple terrorized the population of Eulathis for a couple of years. Everyone was afraid to go out, to have contact with their neighbor; even grocery shopping was a nightmare.  This condition shaped the history of the continent. Many people died and most of the bigger cities were extinguished which lead to a redistribution of wealth and a time of peace between nations as everyone rebuilt.

Transmission & Vectors

Upon contact with infected patients, people would get it.

Causes

An uncontrollable amount of magic takes hold of the body and it is almost impossible to cleanse.

Symptoms

Bursts of magic come out of the person's body with varied and unexpected effects. Spontaneous combustion obliterating everything within a one mile radius.

Treatment

Treatment was hard to come by. At the beginning wizards and clerics tried to pull the energy out, help the sick channel it and have them cast spells all the time, but that did not work. The second option was sending the affected to demiplanes when it seemed their time was close so that they did not cause major damages in the continent, but it was impossible to contain all the cases. In the end the wizards found a way to channel the energy themselves out of the affected body and send it to the Shadowfell plane. That is how the last afflicted got cured.

Prognosis

First, there is a purple coloration to the skin followed by uncontrollable shaking and shivers. Then the affected starts casting magic at random: magic illusions, transforming themselves, fire bolts, etcetera.  After that the effects are bigger and more devastating: fireballs, chromatic sprays, earthquakes, whirlwinds, etcetera.  In the final stage the affected explodes in a radius of one mile consuming everything around, then the purplish energy implodes and ceases to exist, almost like the energy runs out. The body is left behind, black, diminished.

Sequela

For the few sick that actually got cured there was not many sequela, the main one being a slight eyelid tic and a susceptibility to hiccups.

Affected Groups

There was no discrimination with this condition. Eceryone could get affected.

Hosts & Carriers

All humanoids but dwarves were affected by it due to their constitution making them resistant.

Prevention

In the end there was no way to prevent the sickness. If there was direct contact of one person to another, they got it. Social distancing was mandatory during the time it lasted, but they just had to let the run of the sickness run its course until they were able to cure it.

Epidemiology

It moves via direct contact from humanoid to humanoid.

History

A curious wizard was experimenting with portals to other planes of existence in the Neverending Forest and ended up causing a huge explosion that destroyed a great part of the forest and infused a great magic energy into his body. He survived, but had an incredible amount of magic in his body and part of the forest got turned into a swamp.  The Endless Purple resulted into the great cataclysm that currently divides the eras of Eulathis. Several people exploded in the previous main cities decimating the population and bringing everything to dust.

Cultural Reception

The carriers were very much feared. The descendants of those affected who survived became Wild Magic Sorcerers and they are very frowned upon and at times put into clinics.
