Hobgoblin

Closely related to Goblins and Orcs, Hobgoblins are the most nomadic members of the goblinoid family. Standing on average around 5' in height, hobgoblins are lithe and muscular kith/outlanders with reddish skin ranging from pale pink to deep maroon, slightly pointed ears with tufted tips, small though pronounced canines or tusks, somewhat flat noses, catlike eyes, hirsute bodies with hair growing down their spines, hair ranging from shades of red to brunette to black, and on occasion, small horns growing from their forehead at their hairline.   Hobgoblins, traditionally, are pastoral nomads who depend on domesticated livestock, migrating in their established territory to find pasturage for their animals, oftentimes migrating from one end of Etheria to the other cyclically. In order to accomplish such great migrations, hobgoblins rely heavily upon horses and other draft animals to facilitate and hasten their travels, riding on their backs often or in covered wagons pulled behind them. Because hobgoblins do not stay in one place for long, their settlements consist of the wagons their draft beasts pull and the tents they put up when they pause their journeys. This nomadic lifestyle encourages most hobgoblins to become excellent animal handlers and riders, which also enables them to be proficient traders, raiders, and looters.   Conflict and combat with other peoples and more established communities are common features of hobgoblin life, and as such, they frequently train for war and battle by hunting as they travel, particularly excelling in archery. In combat, they frequently use mail, swords, bows, and lances, with most hobgoblin warriors being armed with both bow and lance and using them interchangeably as needed. Because their mounts are such crucial components of their way of life, hobgoblins almost always dress their animals in quilted linen, wool, and iron barding to keep them warm and protected. While their way of life does not make many allies, many hobgoblin tribes get along surprisingly well with Sagitarrum band Centaurs, forming ironbound alliances with the other raiding society when they pass through their lands in Napria that often produce many marriages, many children, many festivities, and much profit as the groups revel and ransack other communities together.   Hobgoblin society is markedly stratified by class and gender, being a matriarchal society in which the warrior-nobility practice polygamy. This means that hobgoblin tribes are led exclusively by women chiefs and their female socioeconomic peers who take multiple husbands while the less affluent remain monogamous. The more husbands a woman has in a hobgoblin tribe can therefore be used as a rough indicator of their standing within the tribe with chiefs often having upwards of six or more husbands who are selected for their beauty, virility, combat prowess, and their skill in animal handling and riding. It is not uncommon for these husbands to form romantic and sexual attachments of their own among themselves and for them to be wed into an ally tribe as a means to secure and maintain a political alliance.   Hobgoblins are also a relatively shamanistic society with half a foot in god-worship and half a foot in animism. Because of this, they almost exclusively worship Deity / Gods that are clearly of nature, such as Theromedeon the Wild Guard, Thalassakles the Crashing Wave, Orodamas the Ringing Hammer, Kallinephes the Thundering Heart, Helionax the Light-Crowned, Eleuthemene the Star-Dappled, and Thanatimetra the Merciful Mother. With the role that combat and war play in their society, it is also not uncommon for hobgoblins to turn to Iroanos the Battle-Wise and Inyu the Forgotten One as patrons of battle. Their worship of such gods, though, is far less concrete than the religious devotion of much of the rest of Etheria, often taking the form of beseeching the gods simply as personified forces of nature or life, and often in more natural or animalistic forms.
