Giantkin

Unlike their humanoid cousins of Dwarfs and Humans, Etherian giantkin are not typically very diverse in appearance. With tough skin ranging in shade from gray-white to gray-green to gray-red, Etheria's giantkin appear as though they have been carved straight from the mountain stone of the high peaks which they tend to call home. The particularly earthen image of giantkin is only reinforced by their sheer size—they are both powerfully built and much taller than other humanoids, standing around 7' to 8' in height and weighing well over 300 pounds. Their eyes tend to be green or brown in color and their hair black. In addition, tattooing is an incredibly common practice among their people and functions as a means of recording important life events such as births, marriages, battle victories, exiles, and deaths.   There are a few reasons why Etherian giantkin, by and large, resemble one another, or at least why many Etherians believe they do. For one, few folk can claim to have seen many giantkin, and fewer still can claim friendship with several let alone one. Giantkin are a reclusive people, living as tribal nomads in the highest mountain peaks far above the slopes where trees grow and where the air is thin and the frigid winds howl. As such, they wander often from peak to peak but rarely travel downward to lower altitudes. Even though every day brings a new challenge to giantkin, what with food, water, and shelter being rare in the uppermost mountain reaches and the ability of a single mistake to bring doom to an entire tribe, they prefer to keep their distance from the politics and problems of others. In this way, giantkin are fierce proponents of independence, survival of the fittest, and being able to take care of oneself and one's tribe. The second reason why Etherian giantkin look quite similar is the reality that their population is small and descended from the same type of Giant indigenous to Drakkar. In fact, in Drakkar, many more kinds of giants exist than do in Etheria and by virtue of that, many more kinds of giantkin exist in the former homeland of the Etherian settlers.   Culturally, giantkin place a premium on self-sufficiency and individual skill. They have a compulsion to keep score, counting their deeds and tallying their accomplishments to compare to others through the use of tattoos. Giantkin love to win, but they see defeat as a prod to improve their skills. This dedication to competition has a dark side, though. Giantkin are ferocious competitors, but above all else they are driven to outdo their past efforts. If a giantkin slays a beast, they might seek out a larger, more powerful monster to battle. Few giantkin reach old age as most die attempting to surpass their past accomplishments. Because of their risk-taking, giantkin tribes suffer from a chronic lack of the experience offered by long-term leaders. They hope for innate wisdom in their leadership, for they can rarely count on a wisdom grown with age. Such traits among Etherian giantkin, it is theorized, are traits inherited from their giant forebears from long ago.   While there are several species of giant indigenous to Etheria, it does not seem to be that case that there are any indigenous giantkin. This could be because the giants that are native to Etheria are generally less intellectually-equipped, are less social, and/or are simply less interested in procreation or sexual activity with non-giants than those of Drakkar. This makes sense as most of Etheria's giants are hólljötnar (hill giants), a race not particularly known for their intellectual power.
