Anselm Vorn is the son of Konrad Vorn, a skilled Wyvern Rider hailing from the swampy region of Adalan, and, if the rumors are true, Ardour. The exact circumstances surrounding his birth are shrouded in mystery, and Konrad Vorn wasn't inclined to discuss the matter with anyone but his closest friends. In any event, like his father before him, Anselm Vorn was destined to become a Wyvern Rider. Not long after his Konrad elderly, heavily scarred wyvern, Fulgur devoured him, Anselm inherited the beast and continued supporting his father's stalwart belief that a wyvern, in order to be successfully ridden, must be dominated by their rider. This meant frequent whippings and treating the creature as little more than a beast to be commanded.

For a time all was well. Anselm was charming, well-liked, and considered to be one of the most competent Riders in the order. However, his brutal treatment of Fulgur earned him the moniker "The Cruel."

Then wyverns and riders started dying, slain by something black with white limbs and needle-like fingers. Accompanied by his fellow Riders, Paragorn, Tai,Torhilda the Terrible and Mason "Yes" Malicore, Anselm was sent out to investigate the cause of these horrifying murders. The group eventually encountered a creature shrouded in strips of black-dyed cloth with pale arms, needle-like fingers that could spread virulent sicknesses, and iron greatswords. Utilizing the tactics they'd learned over years of training, the Riders killed the creature. Unfortunately, Paragorn and Tai descended down a stone staircase that led into the earth and sealed behind them. Anselm didn't see what took place, but, when Andrin Greskin and the other Riders arrived, called by Tai's flare, the Mark of the Beast was found on Tai's flesh. At the behest of his commander, Anselm used a cold iron sword to cut the half-elf woman's head off. But not before he whispered to her, "If the rider is weak, beast is weak as well. Disharmony and discord. I am not surprised."

Two weeks after this assignment, with rumors of a sickness spreading throughout the villages near Dragons Gaze, Anselm was called in to speak with Andrin Greskin about leading an expedition to determine if these villagers could be saved. After picking his team, which was comprised of Garrick, Throk, and Nadia Adler, Anselm flew over to a nearby village and attempted to discern the illness' source. This would eventually lead the Riders to a shadowy figure known as Pestilence, and, after a grueling battle, the monstrous creature was defeated. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to the other Riders, Anselm was possessed by Pestilence, and he was permitted to return to Dragons Gaze alongside his companions.
