Andrin Greskin

Commander Andrin Greskin

"Just because I'm young doesn't mean I can't lead. Just because you're my elder doesn't mean I have to take your word as law. This order voted me commander, and it's about time you old flyers learn to respect that. I am not the boy who climbed this mountain years ago. I am the man who leads you."
— Andrin Greskin to the Elder Council during his first year as commander.
Like his father before him, Andrin was going to be a woodcutter. From a young age, he would swing his ax and travel into the forest to make some coin for his family and keep the cold at bay during the night. During one such outing, Andrin and his father were attacked by a small group of goblins. They managed to fend them off, even killing a few, but not before his father took a nasty cut to his arm. The injury caused his father to lose the ability to cut wood. In an attempt to raise more money to support his family, Andrin joined the military, seeing as they paid soldiers well to defend the border.

Early in his career, he proved to be skilled with a sword and had a good head on his shoulders. This caught the attention of Kay Jotensbane who took him under his wing and taught him strategy and tactics. In the span of a few years, it became commonplace to see Andrin by Kay's side. Eventually, Andrin was given command of his own troops and made quick work of several enemy tribes scattered across the Badlands. He eventually hunted down and killed three powerful leaders of the Rhen tribe. He brought back the heads of Vokur, Odrod, and Gardug, devastating the clans' hold on the lands. This impressed Kay Jotensbane and led to him being given a cozy position in his Uther Jotensbane's inner court as one of his knightly guards.

Andrin learned how to lead men from Uther's example and was quick to use those skills when dealing with other lords under House Jotensbane's banner. It wasn't unusual for Andrin to act as a stand-in for either Uther or Kay during political meetings when neither was available. The people of Ebrus admired and respected Andrin, and there were even rumors that Uther planned to marry one of his daughters to the young man. Of course, this was most likely nothing more than court gossip. It was at this point that scouts from the The Wyvern Riders came looking for potential candidates, and Andrin was high on their list. Uther gave the young man his blessing and Andrin, having denied the ride to Dragons Gaze, opted to climb the mountain instead.

If having a personal recommendation from Uther Jotensbane himself didn't impress the leaders of the The Wyvern Riders then climbing the Goldencrest Mountains certainly did. He was quickly taught what it means to be a rider and took to the lessons well. Sadly, when it came to finding a proper wyvern to call his own, Andrin ran into trouble. None of the young wyverns that were freshly hatched would imprint on him, and many of the older wyverns seemed to want nothing to do with him. For a while it seemed that young Andrin would not succeed in the one task required of a rider, to tame a wyvern.

That is until he caught the attention of a certain one.

Shnee, or as most called him Snow, used to belong to Cole Redfirth. One day, while Andrin was training in the snowy caps of the mountain, Shnee decided to rest beside Andrin. This continued for a few weeks before the beast finally let Andrin approach and take his First Flight. Thus making him an official rider. This caught the eye of Beijor, commander of the riders. He took a liking to the young man quickly, often conversing with him int he dining hall of Dragons Gaze. He eventually allowed Andrin to accompany him on patrols and even let the lad lead a few missions himself. Many riders whispered thatBeijor was grooming Andrin for leadership.

"My only son died of sickness at a young age. I told myself I would never have another, for he could never be replaced. I climbed a mountain and straddled a beast that could easily tear me in twain to avoid the pain of that loss. Now I lay here dying next to the one thing I tried to avoid for decades. A son."
— Beijor's final words to Andrin

During Beijor's last days, Andrin spent a great deal of time with him. He would often read to the dying man from his journal, which none were supposed to read until the commander had passed. When the day finally came for Beijor to take his Last Flight, Andrin was the first to gather his ashes and cast them into the winds. Shortly after this, an election was called and none were surprised to see Andrin take up the mantle of commander, although many of the elders thought him too young. He has led the riders for four years now and has proven to be a competent commander who is greatly respected.
