Mental characteristics

Personal history

Antoni is a good-natured, friendly young soldier who fought for the Wessians during the Wesso-Evonian war and had a major role in the Wessian victory. He is a strong believer in chivalry and the inherent goodness of man, though his time at war has led him to question his beliefs. He was raised on fantastical stories of heroic knights and has dreamed since he was a boy of becoming like them. He joined the war with this very hope in mind, against the wishes of his family. Antoni and his family come from the island kingdom of Ruberia which is to the south of Agros, though his mother’s family is originally from Diyo on the southern continent of Ezura. Antoni was very close to his mother, Chinara, whose values and beliefs he inherited, though he had a more contentious relationship with his father, Cesare, who had trouble connecting with and understanding him. Antoni had always had a rivalry with his twin sister Bianca for their father’s attention, though in Antoni’s mind, no matter what he did, Bianca would always be their father’s favorite. Bianca was the opposite of Antoni: realistic where he was idealistic, reserved where he was outgoing, and self-assured where he was insecure. Antoni saw in his sister the person he knew he could never be, and though he loved her, he was always envious of her. Their shared childhood was spent mostly in Ruberia until their father, who was a successful merchant, moved them to a prosperous port city in the Wessian Duchy of Arlone for greater business opportunities when they were twelve. While in Wesse, Antoni and his sister were enrolled in a Wessian school. As foreigners to a strange new country, Antoni and Bianca struggled to integrate with their Wessian peers. Antoni tried his best to assimilate, however, quickly learning the language and attempting to shed the cultures he grew up with. In Wessian school, Antoni was taught a propagandized version of Wessian history, in which the violent wars of the recent past were seen as just and those who waged them were held up as heroes who saved these nations from misfortune and poverty. Every twisted truth Antoni was fed he believed, not out of a lack of intelligence but out of a naive hope that the world of his ideals, one where virtue always prevailed over evil, existed. Wesse, Antoni was told, was an empire that’s conquests were not motivated by greed, but a wish to spread its prosperity to the struggling nations which surrounded it. It was after the Wesso-Elyrean War when Antoni was sixteen that he applied for a Wessian military academy against the wishes of his parents. His parents were furious at his decision to join the academy, fearing for their son and the path of violence he seemed to be headed down. But Antoni continued his training, excelling in a way many of his peers could only dream of. He was almost the hero he had always dreamed he would be. However, many at the academy were angered by his success. He was a foreigner and a nationalistic fervor was growing throughout the Empire. Seeing a Ruberian succeed above Wessians in a Wessian military academy was a blow to the egos of his peers they were not eager to simply accept. Backed by some of the administration of the academy, a group of fellow students ran Antoni out of the school, hoping to hijack his military career before it even started. Antoni returned home at age nineteen, heartbroken and afraid his dreams would never become a reality. Within the next couple of months, however, the Wesso-Evonian war began. Seeing an opportunity to bring glory to himself and the nation he had called home for seven years of his life, Antoni volunteered. His family was horrified. They had planned to flee the country for Ruberia but now that Antoni had volunteered, they didn’t know what to do. They couldn’t abandon him, but he couldn’t, and wouldn’t, abandon his post and leave with them. Out of a warped sense of honor, Antoni told his family to leave without him, promising to make them proud in death or in life. Soon, Antoni was alone in Wesse with no friends or family to speak of, being shipped off to fight for the glory of the Empire in Evona. Towards the beginning of the war, Antoni found joy in battle. He was good at it, quickly earning the respect of his fellow soldiers and his superiors. But war, Antoni soon discovered, was not as glorious as he expected it to be. With every life he took, Antoni began to lose more and more faith in the cause he had been manipulated into believing in. He was horrified by the monstrous corrupted version of his ideals he had been molded into. When he was finally knighted a year before the end of the war after the Battle of the Shimmering Lake, any ounce of pride he may once have felt at this achievement was negligible. In truth, he was ashamed of what he had done to achieve this. Following his knighthood, he was injured somewhat severely in battle and entered a deep state of depression. His healer was Guinevere, an Elyrean fairy who had been captured at the beginning of the war by the Wessians. Despite his newfound cynicism for the cause he had once believed in, Antoni was not without the romanticism and idealism integral to who he had always been. In the face of great despair at the state of himself and the world around him, Antoni found happiness in Guinevere. He became infatuated with her beauty and gentleness despite the harsh world surrounding her and she too became infatuated with him. They soon began a fast-paced, emotionally intense love affair which they attempted to keep a secret from everyone around them. Within two months, however, keeping their relationship a secret became impossible as Guinevere had fallen pregnant. Antoni, fearing for her fate should she become a young unwed mother raising a child alone in a conservative, patriarchal society like Wesse quickly proposed. They were married within the week. Four months later, the war ended and Antoni was a war hero. He was famous throughout the nation for his bravery and ferocity and he along with some of his fellow soldiers were summoned to the capitol of Wesse, Reiksburg, for a celebration of the Wessian victory. Accompanied by Guinevere, her mother Ophelia, and a fellow soldier and newfound friend of Antoni’s, Igor, Antoni left for Reiksburg. As the chaos of war had ended, Antoni was no longer able to ignore his emotional turmoil and was now forced to confront it. But there was no way to heal this trauma that had taken over his life. He was haunted by it, seeing only the death and destruction he had caused whenever he closed his eyes. Everyone called him a hero, praising him in a way he had never experienced before, but he knew the truth of it. He was a monster. Horrific, twisted, cruel, and incapable of redemption. He wanted more than anything to end the stain on the world that was his meaningless life. What was the point of living if all that ever came from his actions was death and destruction? The only thing stopping him from taking his own life was his new wife and unborn child, both of which he knew he could not abandon. After two months of travel, Antoni and his group reached Reiksburg. While in Reiksburg, he discovers a plot to take down the Empire spearheaded by Viktor, a young man with mysterious powers disguised as a court singer. Antoni sees in this revolution a new and more just cause to fight for, hoping to redeem himself whatever the cost may be. Before he can even begin to redeem himself, however, Antoni must learn to understand the person war has turned him into while regaining the hope and optimism he had once had.
