Ivys

King Ivys (a.k.a. King of a Thousand Moons, The Eternal King)

Childhood

From his toes to the tips of his antlers Ivys looked like every other member of his kind, but in his veins ran royal blood, consecrated by the holy Lycilia herself. With this blood his future was already determined. His father was the king of the eternal forest and one day Ivys would have to take his place and face Lycilia himself. He was the last and only still living child of his parents, who both couldn’t have any more children. None of his siblings survived the last long, hard winter, most of them dying of the cold, rather than of hunger. This way Ivys was the last heir of the eternal throne. The People obviously knew of his status and treated him accordingly, through which he could never be sure if someone really was his friend or just interested in a good relationship with the royal family. He never spent much time with others his age and didn’t have the time to either. His mother trained him in the old languages and writing since it was the kings duty to keep these and the old tales of Esterya and the Shojorin alive.

The Beginning of a New Reign

Ivys was only 73 when the life left his father and he had to confront Lycilia. She was the one that gave the kings her blessing and the power to control sunlight, but this gift came at a cost: its users lost their eyesight. Sometimes though, this only affected one of their eyes, but if they were to weak, they went blind on both eyes, like Ivys’ father did. The process itself was not without risk and there had already been some that did not survive it.   They buried his father and brought Ivys to the shrine of Lycilia , where she appeared to him in her physical form. He had to face her on his own and swear his oath, before she would transfer a part of her power onto him. His auburn hair turned pale green, almost as white as his pale skin, and his antlers grew to their full size, as they did for all those preceding him. As the ritual was over and Lycilia had vanished, Ivys had lost the light in his right eye and Lycilias mark had burned itself into his iris and would from now on shine bright, every time he made use of her power. As of now he was the new king of the eternal forest and the Shojorin .

A Deal for Eternity

After the first few years of his reign had passed, there appeared to be a problem; the new king wasn’t able to have children nor did he enjoy such actions. Many eligible young women were send to him, but none of them were able to receive a child from him. To prevent the tribe from knowing about this, which would cause shame to fall on the royal bloodline, it was forbidden for all those women to even talk about it.   No one knew what would happen if the bloodline would break down so Ivys’ mother made a drastic decision. Her son should make a deal with the dryads, which would prevent him from aging and thus make him king for eternity. The price was high. His immortal soul for an eternal life. If his life would find an end in any other way, his soul would then be used as an energy source by the dryads, preventing it from ever finding its way into the afterlife.   But this wasn’t the only thing they demanded for their services. They needed the soul of a demon of the same race to prolong Ivys’ life. Because of this he would have to sacrifice one of his tribe's members. This was already custom so the dryads would prevent the tribe from extinction during the long, extreme winters that had been getting longer than usual in the last decades. This way the tribe didn’t notice it that much, since they had simply been made too believe, that the dryads had raised the price for their deeds.   The ritual itself was bloody. To complete it, Ivys had to kill the sacrifice with his own hands and drink part of his blood so his body wouldn’t reject the energy of the foreign soul. When they told him about this, he refused to do it at first – he couldn’t just kill one of his tribe members – but his mother made use of his unconditional trust in her and and that he would basically do everything she told him, so in the end Ivys did as she commanded and completed the ritual. During the first time he almost collapsed, but through the years he got number and number and even continued long after his mother had already died.   Obviously, some members of the tribe got suspicious as their king didn’t seem to age, but than they just attributed it to Lycilia’s blessing. With time those who still witnessed the times, in which their kings changed, died out and so this knowledge slowly vanished. Ivys wasn’t very interested to keep it alive as well.

Isolation of his People

Ivys was also the one to start the war with the humans and later the one to decide that his kingdom would isolate itself from the outside world and disappear into the depths of the eternal forest. But he did not just Isolate his kingdom, he also isolated himself from anyone else. Ivys saw everyone he once knew and loved die after a while, so with time he stopped letting people get too close to him.

Author's Notes

Ivys is probably my character with the most detailed backstory. I love working on him and I could probably write a whole book just about his life. Ironically in the book I'm actually writing he is not much more than a side character and only appears around the third quarter of the story. I really hope i'll be able to implement at least some of what i thought off.   If you have any comments/ critizism, it would be really appreciated, since I'm really trying to work on and improve my writing, character development and worldbuilding.
