Olympia

"On our rare trips to Olympia, I'm always asking Church if we can go shopping for more than just supplies but it's always the same with him, worrying too much about time and making our lives more boring then they have to be. For some reason he doesn't think that we should be able to have a single moment of calm when we're not looking for objects of extreme power or babysitting Asménos."~Levoith Silverscribe, Head Researcher of the Authenian Republic.
Olympia is the Capital of the Authenian Republic, a massive city seated right beside Mount Olympus. It is known for it's size, beauty and high standard of living. It is where the senators convene to come to important decisions and where the Elpida Academy is located.

Demographics

Most within Olympia are middle or upper class, and are rarely concerned with money. Many are writers, tutors, musicians and philosophers. The richer citizens are lawyers, diplomats, high ranking government officals and landowners.   Those who do have a house in Olympia are typically students of the Elpida Academy, training to become mages of one of the schools of magic.

Government

Taxes in Olympia are generally high, due to the wealth of the inhabitants and the amount of effort it takes to maintain and protect the city. Taxes go towards the maintenance of public spaces, keeping the road smooth, the fountains clean and the trees watered. A significant amount of tax money goes to paying the guards that protect the city from those who would harm it.   The Authenian Senate meets in Olympia in order to come to conclusions about what actions to take, from approving laws to highering and lowering tax rates in certain cities.

Defences

Elite Guards patrol the streets of Olympia and watch for outside threats from the watchtowers mounting the city walls. Elite Guards have received impressive amounts of training, and often wield magical weaponry.   The watchtowers throughout the city are mounted with arcane cannons, capable of disintegrating their target, as well as nonlethally containing them. These cannons were designed by the AAC, and are renowned for their powerful design.   Arcane runes are scattered throughout the city, with both destructive and regenerative effects. The guards throughout the city have the passwords necessary to activate these runes.   Nonsentient arcane contructs guard the city, and will attack anyone committing a violent crime. These constructs cannot be bribed, intimidated or reasoned with. They are made of steel and possess incredible strength.

Industry & Trade

Large varieties of books are mass produced within Olympia, and are then spread across Eregost. These books range from historical accounts to poorly written romantic comedies.   Government employed hunters pursue deer. Their pelts are tanned and treated to create leather, which is then sold throughout Eregost to produce everything from bags, to armour to book covers.   Many merchants find their fortune selling supplies to the pilgrims that have come to try climb Mount Olympus. They sell these pilgrims food, warm clothing and potential offerings for the Olympians. These pilgrims come all year round, ensuring that local merchants are never out of business.

Districts

There are six distinct districts that make up the city of Olympia. Each one is kept in pristine condition and is well maintained.   The Thesean District is where the city hall is located. It is were taxes are gathered, petitions are officiated and where the Senate convenes to debate matters concering the Republic. The city hall is a public space and can be visisted by civilians, but it is illegal to enter the senatte chambers without permision.   The Hermetic Distric is the marketplace of Olympia, it is where people can purchase both essential and luxurious items. There are large buildings that act as shopping centers within the district. Many restaraunts are located within the district, as well as the occasional tavern. It is also where entertainment venues and law firms can be located.   The Demetric District is a public park and butanical garden within Olympia. It is known for its large variety of both local and exotic plantlife. There is a manmade lake at the center of the Demetric District, where some enjoy to sail small rafts or swim. A small amount of fish were imported into the pond, as were frogs and lilypads.   The Hestian District is where houses, appartments and inns can be found. Most appartments are part of large marble towers, were each floor would belong to a different tennent. The inns range from small cheap rooms for travellers to luxurious medium sized rooms with a study, for those that are temporarily working within Olympia.   The Athenic District is dedicated to the defense of Olympia and the rest of the Authenian Republic. It is were weaponry for the AMC is fabricated, as well as where chariots and war machines are created. The Elpida Academy is located within the Athenic Distric, as many of the mages it will educate could be vital to the protection and preservation of the entire Authenian Republic.   The Persean District, also known as the temple district, is where the citizens of Olympia go to display their worship and reverence of the Olympian Gods. There is a temple to each of the twelve Olympians within the Persean District, except for Demeter, as her followers prefer to pray to her in the Demetric Distric, among the trees.

Guilds and Factions

Churches to all the Olympians have their presence within Olympia, as each one of the twelve Olympians has a temple or large shrine for worship within the city of Olympia.   Each of the four Authenian Committees has a large presence within the city, and each of the Committee's Directors is expected to visit Olympia at least once a year to give a report to the senate.

Tourism

Olympia is visited by many pilgrims on their way to Mount Olympus. They stop at the city to rest after their long journey, as well as to purchase supplies and offerings to the Olympian Gods.   Aspiring mages travel from all across Eregost in order to be formally trained in the arcane arts at Elpida Academy. Many of these mages do not make it through there first year before they quit, but those who endure the stress and challenges of mastering their prefered school of magic often get a full time job in the AAC.

Architecture

The buildings and walls of Olympia are made of white and grey marble. Both due to its pleasant appearance and due to the fact that it is a structurally sound building material. Many buildings have detailed chiseling on their walls and pillars.   Most buildings have floors made out of ash wood, as it is more comfortable to stand on and it makes falling less painful.
