Rehmat

The khanpan had finally cornered Raghu in a wall of the mountain, and soon it would reach him. Remembering the words for the ones who are about to die, Raghu closed his eyes and began to move his lips in a silent prayer, expecting to go fast and peacefully to the afterlife.   He could hear the beast coming, the acrid odor getting stronger, the strong breathing getting louder... but it stopped.   Opening his eyes, there was a man in front of him, between the beast and the boy; he was serene as the Sleeping Lake, and seemed to be looking directly at the khanpan's eyes.   "Calm down, boy", he said.   Raghu didn't know if the mas was speaking to him or to the beast, but that words hit both equally.   (...) not much later, the khanpan went away, disappearing in the snow.
Secrets of Mapata

Public Agenda

The Rehmata monks are a group of very disciplined warriors, followers of Santata, The Way of the Calmness. Their main objective is to protect the small communities of Mapala Mountains from the beasts that live there, without, however, killing or hurting these beasts due to their ecological role.

Training

They train their bodies to keep in shape and be able to fight, if necessary, using a specific martial art, called Rehmakala. Rehmakala consists mostly of non-lethal moves and the use of blunt weapons, although there is also some training regarding lethal weapons and moves.   The combat, however, is avoided if possible. The main techniques to confront opponents are based on body language and calmness: the beasts of the mountain, like the khanpans and the larkas, can smell the pheromones released by people who are stressed or scared, and thus the monks need a resilient mind and emotional control to remain calm even in extreme situations. Another important part of the training involves the voice: with the right tones, Rhemat monks can help people calm down, and even the ferocious beasts.

Philosophy

To make the calm mind continuous, the rule and not the exception, the philosophy of Rehmat also includes charity, kindness, respect and love for all people and creatures. They also have little to no personal items, sharing almost everything between themselves and counting on the kindness of the population when travelling.

If two are calm, no blood is spilled.

How people see the Rehmata

In Rehmat

Rehmata themselves see each other as a part of the whole; they are important, but not more than a tree, a rock, or another person.

In the villages of High Mapala

Villagers, specially the poorest, see them as saints, protectors of the mountain.

In the towns of Low Mapata

Citizens from major towns, specially at the bottom of the mountains, have divided opinions: common folk mostly see Rehmata as heroes, a kind of a myth; the rich mostly see them as mad men, tramps of the mountain; merchants may see them as an obstacle to their business, specially those who hunt.
