Magic in Eleros

Magic

Magic. The word itself sends shivers down the spines of every mortal to have lived. Magic. In equal parts terrifying and wonderful. Magic, that which can tear a mind and strip a body to the bone, can rain down death and bring about life.

What Is Magic?

There is next to nobody amongst the Kellanari who understand magic to any degree, and few people really try. They know the secrets of magic will never fall into their hands, so they ignore it. But everyone knows it exists. Magic is most commonly practised by the Warlocks that originated in Eleros. They discovered magic extremely early in their development, and it fundamentally changed them, so much so that it would be a far stretch to call a Warlock human. The reason that the Warlocks discovered magic, and not those of far-off Kellanar and Messaladron, is because Eleros is fundamentally imbued with it. It is a young continent, and thus the Elemental Trees are more fluid here, more easily adapted. Without training, people can still do magic, but the results of an unprepared spell are almost always terrible, with slippage and overload occurring in huge amounts. Thus, people learned how magic worked. They worked out how to measure magical energy, and came up with the idea of Elrics, the unit of magical measurement. Then, seeing the potential in magic, the Warlocks of Eleros set out to further their knowledge. Soon it became clear that the vastness of the Elemental Trees were too vast for any one person, so the Warlocks split into schools, seeking out the things they sought to manipulate. Schools specialised on a certain item on an Elemental Tree, meaning there are schools of Fire and Earth, Water and Ice, Fire and Heat and Water and life, and so on. The Elemental Trees

It is said that the world was created, and will end, in Fire and Water. If the Warlocks know anything about magic, and they do, this is true. Fire and Water are the two most basic things in the world, and their very nature is the building block of everything that exists. Thus, all things can be traced back to one of these elements if placed on a large chart known as an Elemental Tree. The two Elemental Trees have been expanded upon greatly in the time since their conception, and now each hold in excess of two hundred elements, but there are only about a hundred total elements that can be manipulated - there are certain restrictions to any magical Transformation.
