Linserk

"Linserk. A proud nation of strong people. Like their western neighbours, they are under constant threat of attack, crop failure, and snowstorms. It's a miracle they've made it this far. That said, when I look at their faces, I see strength. Will. An indomitable resolve to survive. Perhaps it is not so surprising, after all. "

Linserk is a country in the south-east of Breklend.

History

Linserk stems from several groups of Kelbrike refugees escaping religious persecution from the Cordaint Empire. After arriving in Breklend, they quickly spread across the coast, forming a nation. This remained stable for around 60 years until a group of lords in the east of Linserk conspired to overthrow the King, taking power for themselves. This proved unsuccessful when the King was given a tip-off by one of the conspirators' subordinates. The King quickly sent an army to kill the lords, but underestimated their military capability. They quickly became locked in conflict, neither side able to gain an advantage, until finally the King put forward a solution. Split Linserk in two, the side west of the river remaining loyal to the King, and the side east of the river being given to the lords.

Demography and Population

The people of Linserk are Breklendian, an ethnicity stemming from Kelbrike refugees. The majority of its inhabitants live along the coast, where the weather is milder and fish is plentiful.

Territories

Linserk occupies about a quarter of Breklend, bordered to the south and west by ocean, east by a wide river, and to the north by the Prothaein Mountains. It has a series of rivers flowing through it from the mountains, meeting the the Atloan Ocean.

Military

Linserk's military, while unstructured, is very capable. Linserk launch frequent raids on Shadra and Syndal, taking valuables, weapons, and knowledge. Another use for the military is defending the borders to the east and north, two very different challenges entirely. The rulers of Arlden have powerful armies, all trained on Linserk. A series of beacons link the river dividing the two to strongholds further west. To the north are the mountains, on the other side of which are various nomadic groups, some of which are dangerous. While the mountains provide an excellent natural defense against raiders, additional defense has been built in the form of watchtowers and small walls in flatter areas.

Foreign Relations

Breklend often trades with Jaera, and very occasionally with the True Orcs of eastern Syndal. It typically trades in iron and Shadraki valuables in exchange for foodstuffs and wood.

Infrastructure

Linserk, much like the rest of Breklend, is very underdeveloped in terms of infrastructure. Roads are rare, with most settlements being on the coast. There are two main roads in Linserk. One connects the river on the eastern border to Kettr, a city on the western coast of Breklend. The other connects a large stronghold in the Prothaein Mountains to Lellir, the capital of Linserk and the largest city in Breklend.
