Cypress was born second-in-line to the Astari throne with both the Blood of Kings and the Eye of Savantia. His Eye of Savantia came from a marriage alliance between his maternal great great grandfather (House Azalea) and House Silverbell. As a Royal and a holder of the Blood of Kings, killing Cypress would be sacrilegious. There were also many worried about the dwindling of eligible candidates for the throne. The Silverbells' attempts to reclaim their bloodline were villainised as it placed undue restrictions on the crown's marriages, though the King privately reassured them they would not marry away holders of the Eye of Savantia to non-Silverbells.

Before Amaryllis founded Altea, Cypress met her on the battlefield while she was fighting under the Outesian Empire as the leader of the Band of Altea. As the only person to have matched him in combat, Cypress has been continuously fascinated by her. He has yet to decide whether he wants to kill her or wants her to kill him more.
