Cirrosol

A cloud passes, another forms. The rain falls and the water cycle continues, but among the empty skies a swarm of creatures spread their wings and the clouds listen.
You called them "Creatures of light and dark, claimed by a non-existent god." What is it with your obsession? You've wasted your life away for the sake of a regular bird species and a fake god.

Overview

Cirrosol are a bird of prey, known to fly the sky in flocks that appear as clouds. Hunting by obscuring the sun and preying in the shadows, they hunt anything and everything from mice to flocks of geese. This incredible range of prey, combined with their powerful strategy, earned Cirrosol the name of the apex predator of the skies.

Hi, You have an interesting idea here. However, the way you have presented the information, in a quite "scientific/factual way" works against you when the information doesn't quite sound right. Some issues that I found with the species include:

  • "obscuring the sun and preying in the shadows": It is unclear exactly what do you mean, or if this was a figure of speech. While some birds do create shade to attract prey, that requires them to be standing in a spot, not flying in the air. Are you suggesting they all coordinate to create a shadow, which somehow makes their prey easier to catch? If so, how?
  • These birds have two stomachs, which I assume are on top of stomach/gizzard in normal birds. Birds have fast digestion times for a reason: it is difficult (sometimes impossible!) to fly with a full stomach. Adding an extra stomach to a bird should keep this in mind.
  • Thicker shells: Please note that shells regulate gas exchange in the egg, amongst other things, so it's not a trait you should change lightly. A darker colour egg is more likely in a cold environment.
  • Hawks and eagles attempting to predate a 20kg bird? I find that rather unlikely.
  • Aside from some of the unexplained or unlikely issues, it sounds like an interesting species. I personally would focus more on what makes it special, like their hunting technique, or why people think they are claimed by a god. I also really liked your presentation style, it made your article easy to read.

Ooh. Thanks for all of the advice. I didn't really look into the science of the species as they are more just to fill the prompt. I'll consider that when I edit the article. Thanks!

Regarding offspring and diet: considering they would need a big amount of food around to make a cumuli viable, does it happens that mothers, or fathers, eat the weakest babies for survival reason, like the rabbits sometimes. Is cannibalism an occurence in that species.   Very detailed article, i was wondering at some point if the word count wasn't exceeding XD.   Have a good summercamp !

No. I don't think that would happen. They eat so many different species over such a large area, due to their flight, that they have plenty of food.   It's actually a surprisingly short article.   Thanks!

I love the detail you've put into this, especially around considerations for different environments. There's one point I'd add to what MGatta has already stated. A 2 meter wingspan is roughly the same as a bald eagle, but their mass is more around 6 kg at the high end. Bird tend to stay light to aid flight. These guys are currently pretty heavy.

Ooh. Thanks. I had no idea what a bird would weigh so I threw in a random number. Thanks!
