Vitality Trader

The Alliance of Wandering Scholars mostly hides magic from the general world, because the risk of magic being handed to the general public is higher than the benefit of spreading magic around. For every good magical effect, there are dozens of magical items that are the magic equivalent of loose nukes, and even "good" artifacts can be used for ill in the wrong hands.   Vitality traders also hide magic from most of the outside world. They aren't generally people who are trying to tell everyone about the new magical object they have. However, instead of keeping magic completely locked up, vitality traders are in the market to sell that magic. Someone who steals an immortality drug to share it with the world is not generally called a vitality trader; someone who steals an immortality drug to sell it to the highest bidder is.   "Vitality" traders is occasionally a misnomer. Vitality traders may be selling any sort of magical artifact. The name comes from the truism that people will give almost anything for their own life. Healing or immortality artifacts are the most valuable to vitality traders, but most will have another field that they work in when they aren't finding health. Someone who trades in war artifacts is going to have different policies and clients than someone who trades in wealth artifacts, but both of them will be eager to pick up and sell a rare fountain of youth.   The most important priority of Scholars is to remove those artifacts from the hands of vitality traders. When it's a choice between keeping an artifact or stopping a person, the artifact comes first. This means that some percentage (estimates are up to 50%) of vitality traders don't actually have anything real to sell. Anyone looking to buy from a vitality trader should be cautious, because they may not get what they're paying for.
