The North

Whispers in the wind

The North is the largest region in Eidos, being nearly as big as the rest of the lands combined. It is sparsely populated, with vast wilderness, forests, pine-covered hills and snowcapped mountains, although it also is home to one of the biggest cities in the known world, Lindakar. Its northern border is made up by the The Frostbite Mountains . Its southern frontier lies along Farnfell River, a marshy region separating it from the rest of Eidos. The narrowness of the area and the difficulty of the terrain make it a natural border for the region, protecting it from invasion.
Contrary to its size, the population of the North is just under one million, most people living in small settlements spread across the land. Thus one can go days on end without seeing signs of other people when traversing the region.

Geography

The northern climate is cold and harsh in the winter, with relatively short summers. When you enter the North from the Farnfell River you are greeted by a sprawling sea of bright trees and mildly cool temperatures that separate it from the rest of region which gets increasingly colder as you move towards the Frostbite Mountains. The area surrounding Lindakar consists of a sprawling steppe to the west and north while the Iron-pine forest reigns in the east. Putting any damage on the Iron-pines without permission is considered a grave offense in the North and many would-be lumberjacks found their end there.
The south of Lindakar is dominated by farms which provide much needed food to the capital, filling its stores for the cold seasons, when most of the farmers come to winter within the safety of its walls.

Fauna & Flora

As mentioned before, the North boasts both colorful vegetation as well as snow-capped hills and mountains.
The region presents a variety of trees such as Larches, Birches, and Pines each coming in shades of red, orange, yellow or green, depending on how far north you venture. Because of the nearby mountain ranges, the land grows a multitude of Mountain Flowers, some with medicinal purposes. Other plants including Lavender, berries, roots, wild gourds and carrots also grow aplenty here.
After the Rune Wars two elven sisters ventured past the Farnfel, putting the basis for all farming in the region. Growing vegetables and wheat in the southern parts. They later offered seeds to the natives, so they could grow the food themselves, thus starting the farms near Lindakar.
Wolves are the most common predators in any part of northern Eidos. They travel in packs and always attack all at once. Sometimes they will even move in specific directions to confuse their prey and catch them off guard. An old saying in the north says that by the time you sport a wolf, there already are ten more nearby.
The Bear is just as common as the Wolf, although they are more reserved and tend not to attack travelers unless provoked. Or if one is unlucky enough to be near its den.
Not as common, but considerably more dangerous are the Wendigo found in the northen parts of the region. Legends speak of men eating the flesh of others out of desperation and having their from twisted and corrupted. They are then doomed to eternal hunger and no matter how much they eat from the meat that cursed them, they will never be satiated. Yet, this does not stop them from hunting folks in secluded areas and in the dead of night.
In the barren plains of the west, roaming clans of centaurs can be found hunting. They are, mostly, left to their own devices; as long as they do not raid any civilized settlements.

Some northeners also keep the company of huge mastiffs that are mixed with a touch of wolf blood, making them stand as tall and wide as a dwarf. Justly renowned, they are intelligent war hounds. Fully capable of understanding speech and of performing complex commands, they are as deadly in a fight as any armed warrior. Mastiffs also seem keep loyal to one master until death. Legends state that the mages specifically created them long ago to better control the populus. However, the mastiffs eventually defected to the local northeners that the mages were fighting.

Natural Resources

The north prouds itself as the main supplier of wood of the land. It's iron-wood trees being prized for their incredible hardiness, making them ideal for boat and shield crafting. Wool, dried meat and fish are also some of the more abundant resources the north uses for trade with other regions. Ships filled with salted meats and bolts of cloth leaving almost daily from its two gulfs and other coastal towns for the southern parts of Eidos.

History

The north has had its fair share of hardships, like all the other regions. One could argue that the people living here have had it the worst of it all. Its once free people were turned to slaves by a would be wizard-king, only a handful escaping by crossing the river south. They were subjugated for nearly a hundred years when they revolted in the middle of the Rune Wars, pushing their oppressors past the Frostbite Mountains, letting them to rot in the frozen wasteland.
