The night had come down fast and hard on Detective Sally Top. She pulled her great coat around her more tightly against the mist that had rolled in from the river Forth, hiding even the streetlights further up the High Street. She'd got the call to go to Parliament House at 7pm, when all the decent people of Edinburgh were at home with their M&S ready meals. She absent-mindedly pulled a crisp packet out her pocket and let it flutter down into the gutter. "Why is it always me?"

She had reached the back of St Giles and a beat bobby let her in. "Where did it happen?" "Top floor of the library, Detective Inspector," he replied. "Christopherson has the suspects in the office when you want to talk to them."
