Kartic

Schecter20
Among the harsh and demanding terrain of Highland Mountains, stands a small town known as Kartic. This beautiful town is set against the backdrop of The Northern Border, atop a small peak. Grand houses carved into the mountainside which the peak is surrounded by there is a sense of magic in the air here in this mining town to say the least.

Demographics

Among the people there is a huge pay and wealth gap. The poorer miners, often Dwarven or Gnomish work endlessly to make a living within the mines. Wizards and Druids of all races are welcome and favoured here and Kartic is known as a magical city not only for its' beauty, but also its inhabitants.

Government

The Government in Kartic is a magical council. Run exclusively by Wizards and Druids they use their spells and powers in order to govern Kartic. This means that the magical residents are rich and prioritised while non magical folk who live here are generally poorer. The Magical Council is overseen by the Head Mage but instead of being an outright ruler, this position is more regarded as a representative position or one with a seemingly grand title but very little actual political power in Kartic itself.

Defences

In order to defend the town, as well as the obvious mountain range to the north giving them cover, there is also a height advantage in play. The Overseers keep watch and can see danger coming from miles away. However there does not need to be many overseers on duty however as the city is protected by a magical forcefield held in place by an enchanted Emerald in the Head Mage quarters. As it is so powerful and the safety of the town is reliant on it, the precious gem is under constant guard. However, if the emerald is destroyed there are hardened dwarven and gnomish citizens to deal with as well as experienced magical folk.

Industry & Trade

Most of Kartics' income comes from the iron mines that are set up just outside the city. Iron ore is by far the biggest export, as well as other materials such as coal and limestone.

Infrastructure

Roads in and out of Kartic are top notch. Paved and well marked, they are among the most stable roads in Ecura and the reason for this is so they can still be seen and followed in the snow. Water is scarce up here. The nearest stream is treacherous to get to on a regular basis without carving through the mountainside, so the Kartish people collect snow when it falls and store it in their homes in a pool. There is also a tunnel system that runs underneath the city, they were disused years ago and there are no recollections as to why in documented history of Kartic.

Assets

There is a tonne of mining equipment in Kartic. There are many shops who specialise in magical items and potions, naturally.

Guilds and Factions

There are many mage and wizardry guilds in Kartic, such as Destruction Spell Enthusiasts and the Druidic Order.

History

Kartic was the settlement given to Drixel when he agreed to sign the Treaty of Forgiveness. Before the treaty was signed however, Drixel's position was already being challenged within the tribe as some members found him to be lacking in leadership qualities. This resulted in his chance to rule over Kartic to be challenged by other members of the tribe who threatened to overthrow him by force if he did not agree to establish a council. Since then the Magical Council saw that the town was well protected and as prosperous as possible despite a challenging location, however sacrifices had to be made. The poor would suffer while the Magical Folk favoured themselves and focussed on education and spell learning. It was during this time that the mysterious underground tunnels were constructed. Although, what for, remains a mystery to this day.   Today, Kartic has truly become the master of its location and having a bunch of iron ore on the grounds of the town certainly helped it prosper. Truly tough defences have been put into place combined with the geographical location also make it a fortress from attacks.

Architecture

In the rich areas of Kartic, the grand houses are carved into the rocky mountain face. Some are as tall as the trees of the Mids, and some as small as the dwarves who also reside within the city. Being magical, the residents can be of and race, shape or size. Some houses look more like temples, such is the imbalance of wealth here. The poorer, non magical residents live in huts on the brim of the town in huts. Less distance to travel to the mines and the less they'll be annoying the rich. The poor would not be classed as slaves however since it is paid work they do in the mines, however the conditions can be horrific. Inside every home however, regardless of wealth or class, there is a pool to store snow in. This snow then melts and when needed, the water is collected and boiled to eliminate bacteria for drinking purposes.

Geography

High above the ground on a flat peak, in the middle of Highland Mountains, set against a backdrop of sandstone. The views are breath taking which can sometimes be dangerous at this altitude.

Iron ore, coal, limestone and more can be found within the mines.
