Eclipse Earth World Bible

Welcome to Eclipse Earth! We're so happy that you decided to give us a read. Before you dive into the wiki, there are some things that you should know in order to have the best reading experience.   Eclipse Earth is a neo-noir superhero story that is open to public collaboration and use. The characters, locations, and story in this world are free for anyone to incorporate into RPG campaigns, short stories, books, film, and other artistic works, with the only catch being that users "share alike" and allow others to build on what they wrote.

Canonicity

Sometimes, collaborative worldbuilding can lead to differing or conflicting versions of the same story. In many fictional worlds, deference is given to official publications to determine what is "canon" to that story. Of course, in a collaborative world, this method does not work. Rather than establishing one official canon, the curators of Eclipse Earth have decided that, much like history, the documents on this site are open to interpretation. Readers are encouraged to analyze the differences in the available accounts and come up with their own personal "headcanons" about what "really happened" in the world. When contributors write material to be included in this wiki, they are mostly free to write as though thier own headcanons are the truth.   However, without any editorial control, the lore of this world will quickly become confused and muddled. In the study of history, we can often draw distinctions between level headed (although biased) historical accounts and fantastic myths. Naturally, those intuitions are not nearly as present within a fictional work, so we as the curators of this wiki have decided to implement a Canonicity tag system to be applied to the upper-right section of all articles on the wiki. Using the canonicity tags, readers can get a better feel for how readers in-universe would respond to a particular account.

Canonicity Tags

Authorial

A rare few articles must be accepted as 100% factual in order for the world to work. These articles usually break the fourth wall and refer to the world from the absolute perspective of the author, either to refer to the real world or to establish foundational elements of Eclipse Earth that must unify all contributions to the world. These articles are designated with an Authorial canonicity tag.

Fictional

Other articles may refer to material that is known to be fiction within the universe of Eclipse Earth. These documents were clearly identified and disseminated as fiction by their writers. While this content will probably be rare, any content that is known to the characters as fiction will be marked with a Fictional canonicity tag.

Literary

Some works would not typically be classified as fiction, but are also not truly nonfiction. Works such as art pieces, musical pieces, poetry, or other subjective expressions of artistry will be given the Literary canonicity tag.   Articles containing content other than Authorial, Literary, or Fictional will fall on a spectrum based on how trustworthy or believable their content would be to people living in Eclipse Earth.

  • Mythical content deals with highly speculative, fantastic, or otherwise unprovable material. This content may contain some truth or be entirely correct, but it is generally outside the realm of provable, concrete facts.

  • Spurious content may be true, but is generally untrustworthy or difficult to believe. This could be lies, propaganda, or a secret so strange no one would believe it.

  • Credible content is from a trustworthy source and generally free from exaggerated elements. However, even credible accounts can still suffer from the biases, mistakes, and agendas of its authors and may not be true.

Outside of Authorial content, nothing on this wiki should be taken as unquestionably true in-universe.

The World of Eclipse Earth

C: Authorial

Eclipse Earth is set in an alternate version of Earth, so in many ways their world is like our own. The sky is still blue, the earth still spins, and gravity still pulls things towards the center of the earth. Other than an obvious difference - superpowers - there are a few other details that set this world apart from the Earth we know.   One major difference is that in this world, the mind is confirmed to exist as separate from the body. This separate mode of reality, the realm of the mind, serves as the source of superhuman abilites and allows superhumans to seemingly violate the conservation of mass and energy. It is believed that this mysterious energy is also the source of some superhumans' ability to create effects at a distance from their physical bodies.   One of the many links between the mental and the physical is Stardust, a rare and highly valuable substance that can amplify superpowers, produce energy from nothing, and even nullify superpowers. While processed Stardust has been safely used in a variety of applications, pure activated Stardust is very dangerous and is currently illegal for civilians to possess.   Since The Eclipse  , the earth has begun to experience more hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions compared to our earth. The causes of this phenomenon are still under study.   Finally, Eclipse Earth does differ slightly from our earth geographically, including details such as:
  • Extra, missing, relocated, or renamed cities
  • Altered coastlines or geographical borders
  • Additional small islands or landmasses
Until mentioned otherwise, please assume that all geographical details are similar to our earth's geography.
Now that you've read the Eclipse Earth New Reader Guide, feel free to explore the wiki to your heart's content! If you're new to World Anvil, the wiki style format might be confusing, so we recommend starting with one of the following articles. Just follow these articles and the articles that come after them and you will receive a sort of "guided tour" of that story within Eclipse Earth.

  [Articles will appear here soon!]

For Contributors

The next articles in the Eclipse Earth World Bible go into more detail about the topics mentioned above and cover material that contributors to this world will need to know. While these articles can be useful to all readers, they aren't quite as exciting as the rest of the wiki and are only really recommended for people who want to create and submit material to be included on this wiki.
