Divine hierarchy
All Divines, Fey, Fiends and spirits, can command powers far beyond the comprehension of mortals. However they are still bound by Astral rules. Although theoretically not a 'law' as mortals would understand it, these Beings of Power can be grouped and categorised according to their metaphysical state. This state, or 'god level', determines a Being's overall sense of power and influence over the planes or it's domain(s). The amount of devout followers is a major way a Being can rise or fall on the ladder but personal actions, such as the killing or capturing of rivals or taking control of powerful magical items or area's also works. Upon acquiring enough worship, magical essences or souls a Being can rise upwards into another group.
Even though the most powerful Beings, true gods, command a lot of pull over multiple domains, this doesn't mean that they cannot be rivaled or outclassed by other Beings, especially on the rival's main domain or plane. Even the true gods aren't omnipotent. None of the known Beings of Power is truely omnipotent, although there are secrets of dormant Beings from The Far Realm that might claim to have such power.
The following list presents a rough outline of the groups into which Beings of Power can be categorised, ranking from highest to lowest.
- (true) Gods: rule a large domain with multiple aspects in their portfolio. Wield absolute power over their domain and generally powerful entities. Usually part of a pantheon. Have many worshipers across large swaths of land and are usually well-known, even to foreigners. Example: Wradi.
- Lesser Gods: rule a small or specific domain consisting of one or a few aspects. Have great power over their domain. Can be servants to true Gods. Generally have some renown and small to moderate followings in specific temples or places. Might also be Petty Gods that have seized power. Example: Whisper Will.
- Petty Gods: rule a very specific domain, aspect or place. Only wield power in their domains but lacking in power outside of it. Usually tied to a certain area of worship and have small cult-like followings. Can be half-gods, mystical beings or even very powerful mortals. Example: The Yellow King.
- Fiendish Lords: varying from lesser to higher to lords in strength. Wield power through mortals who break the veil between the planes, either via conviction and believe or by using powerful magic. Are more likely to manifest themselves in the material plane but can only truly be killed in the Abyss or the Nine Hells. Example: Ascarax.
- Spirits: can influence aspects of nature or elements but have not (yet) claimed a specific portfolio. They do not wield absolute power over their domain and can merely influence it indirectly. Can also be of a more philosophical nature. Example: Abeth.
- Ascendants: (im)mortal beings who wield relative great power(s) but lack a true following of worshippers. With the right increases in power and followers they might be able to seize control over certain aspects and ascent to (Petty) Godhood. Example: Iron See.
